tl/dr: It's a rebranded 2-year-old midrange ~~Samsung~~ HTC with a shell most people describe as piss-colored, a US flag with only 11 stripes printed on it, a Trump wallpaper and Truth Social preinstalled.
And still only available to media representatives.

Pretty much exactly what any sane person expected.

Honestly I'm surprised there's even a device at all

Reminds me of a scam by the son(?) of Pablo Escobar a while back where they sold the ""Escobar"" Fold (which was obviously just a Samsung Galaxy Fold 1) for $200 or something ridiculously low like that.

Of course it sold out within minutes but the only ones that ever received their phones were influencers.

Edit: Actually looks like it's an HTC

Oh, shit, i remember that clusterfuck. Wasn't it also with something something blockchain/web3?

[–] FireWire400@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

I think they tried to make their own crypto currency

So it's not made in America by Americans?

What a rip off I'm getting my deposits back.

[–] mech@feddit.org 21 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It's "assembled in America", most likely the case is attached by Mexicans in a factory that pays bribes instead of taxes.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 6 points 3 days ago

It was never going to be made in America that was pretty much always going to be a lie. It's like the whole US made routers only thing, it's obviously never going to work because the US famously doesn't make anything anymore, and certainly doesn't make anything with chips in it.

Thanks, corrected it.

This blew me away. I had HTC U11 and after that google or whoever it was bought out much of their talent and their next phones were garbage. I assumed the company died, but nope

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

So... The media bought into another Trump trap.

Color me shocked at 6.

[–] BooBees@fedinsfw.app 3 points 4 days ago

Sooo.. billionaires that have always been complying in advance to Trump and fascism in the name of profits.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 71 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The true test of a Trump Phone is whether or not you are a dumb enough to sign up to get one

[–] Soulphite@reddthat.com 54 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

The 'Suckers and Losers' plan.

Edit: I know it's his idiot offsprings 'business' but let's not pretend the pedophile doesn't have his tiny tiny grimey hands in it.

"The technology business is more difficult than some may realize, as parts must be tested for quality assurances," Trump Mobile CEO Pat O'Brien said in a statement to CNET."

Fucking Pat sounds like a real rocket surgeon

[–] fraksken@infosec.pub 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Makes me wonder what they produce which does not need to be tested for quality assurance ...

[–] timochka@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

Republicans.

[–] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 40 points 4 days ago (3 children)

spiffy

Security: As we previously posted, the Trump Mobile website suffered a potential data vulnerability, which might have exposed every customer who made an online account to buy this phone. It's also unclear how long anyone can safely use the Trump phone itself: while Samsung and Google offer seven years of Android OS and security updates for their phones, Trump Mobile hasn't said how many years of software updates the T1 will be receiving, if any.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Sadly databreaches are likely to happen on virtually any site you submit your information to. Companies don't care about security because no one holds them accountable for their failures. Probably especially this site though, because its basically a list of just the biggest suckers in the world.

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Companies in EU do care because of GDPR. It's no joke.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Does EU actually enforce that? And if so, how?

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 5 points 3 days ago

Yes. Member states issue fines. The maximum is the higher of €20m or 4% of global annual turnover.

It’s currently a significant part of the Irish economy. They have issued the largest fine to date, €1.2 billion against Meta in 2023.

[–] northernlights@lemmy.today 6 points 4 days ago

Lol as soon as he gets his money he'll lose all interest, I'd be surprised if any update are going to be tested and made available at all.

[–] Staff@piefed.world -5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I don't think it's true Samsung updates their phones for 7 years. Maybe for the premium lines.

[–] warm@kbin.earth 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] Staff@piefed.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Thanks. Seems only the absolute premium (the S series) gets the full 7 years updates.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 12 points 3 days ago

I mean it's just an Android doesn't it. It's not like the Trump family made their own OS, which would at least have left us with a funny story.

Good, now i can start harassing Trump voters about why they're still using iphones when dear leader's phone is available

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago

The Trump Phone has a waterfall display design that was popular on Android handsets three to five years ago.

The author subtly throwing shade here

[–] _fryerDan@sh.itjust.works 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

i thought this was vaporware?

[–] mech@feddit.org 6 points 4 days ago

Still can't get one if you're not working for approved media.

[–] FireWire400@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

So this thing isn't vaporware? How disappointing

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 2 points 4 days ago

So where are HTC phones built?
