The current president of Mexico is doing socialist reforms, like universal healthcare. The US wants to overturn Mexican democracy and prevent their quality of life from improving. The US also wants Mexico as a colony within its sphere of influence. Going to war against Mexico would mean actual deaths in the US and citizens are already tired of the war halfway around the world in Iran.

And if Mexican standards of living improve maybe migrants stop there instead of coming here, which would normally be a selling point for conservatives, but then they'd lose their boogeymen they're fighting so hard to protect us from.

That's a massive stretch. Cartels are and have been a problem, that's all we care about.

Almost makes you wonder why the CIA keeps getting into bed with them, if that's the case.

The stated reason is barely ever the real reason. Besides, if there are no cartels, who is the CIA supposed to extort for their black books? Hard to buy weapons for your arms trafficking if you don’t have drug money to pay for them.

Even if true I'd rather my government be a relatively apolitical drug cartel than Nazi street gangs I feel like they could be negotiated with and at least id always know where to get drugs
