Out of Context Comics

Comic panels taken out of comics so we can make fun of them!! We love the golden age stuff!

Rules:

  1. Comics must come from actual comic books. No AI or Photoshops.

  2. Single panels are preferred.

  3. Comics should be unintentionally funny. Spider-man cracking wise is not what this is about.

  4. Don't be a dick.

  5. I can't believe I've had to add this... NO RACISM.

I really love the concept of this place, according to the specific vision laid out in the sidebar. It's a damn fertile premise, with loads of fun to be had, methinks. :D

Now, sometime back, I noted that it had been falling in to obscurity, and figured that I'd make an effort to help get it going again, according to FlyingSquid's et al original vision. Cool. So in the past two months I've been working to build up my 'out of context' folder of panels and figure out what the hell to title them as... something which can be surprisingly tricky to pull off! Cool. Across that time I've also posted just under two-dozen funnies here. All good?

Unfortunately, and I really don't know WTF is going on with all that... people are now posting shizzle here that directly breaks multiple rules of the community, and others are upvoting such shizzle to the max, and TBH-- I guess that's cool and all, but I'm just not interested in such low-effort crap. Me, I'm here for the original spirit of the community, but I guess many are not? Fine.

Now, if you REALLY must know upon an egregious example?

"Hofmaimaier@feddit.org," fake name used by @nichehervielleicht@feddit.org:
https://piefed.social/c/outofcontextcomics/p/1953797/bill-is-right

Obviously breaks RULE #1, and to a lesser extent, RULES #2 and #3.

And YET people here upvote that low-effort crap? Okay, got it. Fine. Big part of why I'm going to need a long vacation from this project.

Now do I sound bitchy and uncool upon all that? Absolutely, fluffing-yes. But damn it, I thought I'd tried.

With you on that.

People can do mistakes. They can unintentionally post stuff that breaks the rules and don’t even realize it. A bit like they can upvote something just because the enjoy it, not even realizing the content goes against the rules. To be honest, I don’t understand why you think that post you mentioned breaks rule2?

As an old dude myself (maybe older than you are? Nearing my 60s) I would be tempted to remind you that you can't control people's behavior and probably should not be willing to or you risk losing your sanity. Some people can be dumber than an old wet rag, and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

I quite regularly mention my rather painful first encounter with the Fediverse. It was on Lemmy, but that could apply anywhere on the Fediverse. To put it mildly, I was disappointed and quite frustrated with the shit ton of low effort posts and even shittier politics, when not outright pure hatred, I was served by default. Had I not quickly discovered and learned to use the filtering and blocking tools I would have ran away from the Fediverse, to never come back… like I ran away from Twitter, which is saying a lot in regards to what my default first experience was around here.

(To anyone wondering, no, this is not me being judgmental on anyone. This just me stating that I have clear expectations regarding what I’m willing to spend my time reading and, a lot more importantly to me, what I’m not willing to waste my time with, aka no shitty politics, no low efforts posts.)

When I first found this community I hesitated to join as I really have little interest in memes but quickly realized this had nothing to do with memes, nothing, and that each new post was even quite stimulating and surprising. I joined and did not regret it even though not every single post was a hit with me.

Now do I sound bitchy and uncool upon all that? Absolutely, fluffing-yes. But damn it, I thought I’d tried.

I like most of what you posted. I also don’t like some of the pictures posted by some other contributors and I agree with you: they are not in the spirit of the community. But like I was saying, they can honestly be mistaken and hopefully they can learn.

Why don’t I post myself? I’m not much of a comics person. I’m a huge fan of ‘Asterix’ (which is French so it won’t play well with an English speaking community), ‘Calvin & Hobbes’, ‘Peanuts’ (to some extend) and of ‘Corto Maltese’ but most of what I read are text-based books. Many of the comics I used to enjoy as a child would undoubtedly have been able to contribute some content around here, but since I have kept none of them…

So, thx a lot for what you did. Including this last message, that could hopefully trigger a healthy discussion. I'm not giving up on the idea of reading more of your contributions sometimes in the future.

Oi mate, you seem like someone on the surface who seeks understanding at some level, perhaps diplomatically or for other interesting reasons, and I can certainly respect that, but HAIL NO- that was some needlessly-repetitive, low-effort shizzle that I highlighted right there. I.e. directly careless of the founding points of this community, as painstakingly laid out by the Dude, highlighted more than once by me matey.

And really, that doesn't even tell the tale. Meaning, that it's all very well (and I certainly don't consider myself some posting genius) that I tried to carry on the spirit of the community for awhile, and that none of this wannabe drama really matters in the slightest. XD

Eh, bonne chance pour tout ça, ami, et tu sais où... hehe, me trouver, n'est-ce pas ?

Hi! There was a comic in the beginning of this comm that was about jesus like this, and everyone figured it was fake. But no, it was a real comic. A little hesitant to pull the zombie jesus post because of that reason.

Use the report option on anything you feel is outside of this comms scope. sometimes things slip or RL gets in the way and mods don't see everything.

Appreciate that, TT; I really do.

But the example cited is NOT of that ilk.

Reporting is good, I get it, but the painful reality is that all listed mod accts here are largely defunct, other than yours, occasionally. The point (as I see it) is still to figure out the mission of this place, state it clearly, then use community modding tools to encourage the stated rules.

I.e.-- that weirdo post should never have needed the report button in the 1st place.

I hate bitching upon this stuff, but... sometimes that's how this shizzle goes? Unfortunately, I'm simply not available at this time to mod another community, but maybe someone here wants to step up to make the sidebar rules relevant again..?

Like i said, there will be times I'm not here. Just use the report option even if you think it's obvious. I appreciate it.

Keep submitting too

Absolutely not.

I did my best, and you can do whatever you want to upon my efforts. Maybe in half a year I'd be willing to revisit this shitshow of a failing premise. That's up to you, though.
