And getting paid six figures.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (4 children)

Unfortunately that’s not the same flex it used to be given our current economy. I get paid six figures and I’m scraping by.

There are too many zeros on those bills, and not enough coins.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 12 points 5 months ago (2 children)

6 figures used to be 'you made it money'. Like if you were making $100k a year, you were decidedly upper class. Now this puts you probably right smack in the middle of middle class, especially if you have kids.

I'd say that 'made it' threshold is now probably around the $300k a year mark, if not higher.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Depends where you are and your housing situation. I know people with no kids who inherited houses and make $30-35/hour and live like kings.

[–] rainwall@piefed.social 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Your biggest expenses as an adult tend to be kids(daycare/food/etc) then housing, so yeah its no suprise people making 60-70k who dont have to worry about those would be able to do real well.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 5 months ago

Even then, location matters a hell of a lot for housing prices.

My 2b2b 1200sqft house in small town Texas cost me $110k in 2018, and the value really hasn't changed a ton since (I think it's up to 150 now).

At the time, a comparable house in Houston was at least twice that.

Affording a house in California on $300k is challenging. Mortgages are $10k. Government will take half your income. Paying $10k/month for housing will take most of the rest.

1500 sqft.

And I presume you’re asking because maybe you’re suggesting I have a big house and fancy cars and spend my money wildly. I don’t. I live frugally., and I budget my money accordingly.

But my pay is stagnant (NC hasn’t passed a budget in a couple of years, so no pay raises for us state employees), my car and mortgage insurances are rising, as are grocery and gas prices. Kids are expensive, especially as they get older.

I also stopped buying Starbucks and eating avocado toast. I’m still waiting for those millions to pour in as a consequence. 🙄 /s

same. CT prices. My past does involve misspending as a way to “fix” depression. So i’m working on THAT but yeah. Trim.

I get paid 6 figures to make AI do my job

I was at a birthday party the other night, and I spoke in passing about how I had performed a brand new comedy set the previous night (I'm an amateur stand-up comedian). I've been doing it for a few years and I've gotten pretty good at it, to the point I don't even try out my new stuff at lesser mics, I know what's funny, I write a brand new set every couple of weeks and then go perform it at the one good show my city consistently has. I'm proud of my art, and like I said, I've gotten pretty good at it. like, I consistently have to slow down my set so people can finish laughing at the previous jokes.

Well at the birthday party were a couple of other guys that fancied themselves comedians, but only one of them had ever actually done it, and from what I heard, that single time wasn't the best. It's a karaoke party, so these guys grab the mic, and start reading jokes from their phone... and... Yeah, just lame, hacky, border-line offensive material. Like one guy just straight up googled a joke website and was reading from it. Then the next guy went on to perform and... Man I recognized half the jokes from reddit 🫥 But hey, his girlfriend was laughing so...

Anyway, they wanted me to go up, but... man, a party of like 6 people in a living room isn't a stand-up venue. Every comedian knows this, stand-up doesn't work outside of stand-up. Like, some stuff can, but for the most part, it just doesn't. Especially for my comedy, I use different mannerisms and affectations to lure the crowd into thinking I'm A, then hit'em with B. So I'm essentially playing a character. If you already know who I am, then it doesn't work as well. I did not perform for them.

I dunno, All that to say sometimes I feel like I'm a dummy who over the course of three years of regular stand-up has only amassed around 45 minutes of solid jokes... but then I saw these guys, and... I dunno man, I think I might be really fucking funny. I'll have a chance to prove it to them soon, as I'm inching closer and closer to recording a full special. Hopefully it goes well, or else the real joke will be me writing this circlejerk fluff piece immediately before crashing/burning

Very vaguely reminiscent of the dietician I know whose dietary advice tends to be something along the lines of "if you're happy with your weight and you're surviving, your diet is probably fine" vs the nutritionist who insists that everyone drink raw milk and avoid seed oils

Sometimes professionals know to keep their profession at their profession

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 months ago

You go!!! You're authentic. Those fools are the definition of hacks.

The majority of people actually are imposters, but that's not a reason to stop improving. I'm apalled at the people considered to be professionals in the industries I work in. Reps for billion dollar companies can't tell me what their products actually do, they can only repeat bullshit marketing terms. An IT manager for a very large insurance company told me i needed to call linux to find out why the broken download link they hosted didn't work. A plumbing inspector wouldn't inspect my work because I'm not a licensed plumber, ignoring the fact that everything was to code, he just didn't want to actually inspect when he could sign off without looking if I hired someone. An ophthalmology practice missed retinal cancer on a patient I sent to them because I had found a rapidly growing tumor in their eye. They saw that I had billed an imaging scan, figured they didn't need to run another one, and didn't see anything looking in from the outside. Faxed records are rejected all the time because no one in most offices know how to turn off error correction to allow internet faxes to come through, which I have to use because no offices use hipaa compliant encrypted email servers. A company I hired to lift a massive beam into place for my house measured to the front of the beam on one side, and the back of the beam on the other, so there's a ten inch slant to my entire second floor. The guy working the window at taco bell asked me what fresco style meant. My partner is lactose intolerant, and the vast majority of restaurant workers seem to think mayonnaise is dairy.

I see people talking about imposter syndrome a lot lately, and i don't think half of them are good enough at what they do to be imposters.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 11 points 5 months ago (2 children)

How did your call with Linux go?

[–] SadSadSatellite@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 5 months ago

He told me i had to take it up with keyboards.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 1 points 5 months ago

Imagine Linus Torvalds in customer support :D

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Wait wait. Does mayo not have egg in it? Wouldnt that be dairy!??

Or is that ONLY referring to milk. In my experience people call eggs and milk dairy..or I'm misremembering looll

[–] athatet@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Milk is dairy eggs aren’t. Although I do think they used to be grouped together on the old food pyramid? Maybe that’s where the confusion comes from.

Also yes, mayo is eggs.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 months ago

OK. Haha felt dumb.

[–] Jaimesmith@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

Imposter syndrome really said “you’re not good enough” while everyone else is just winging it 😭

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Also in the same vein, just do shit you arent good at if you want to be good at it. Thats not an imposter either and that counts with code (pointing at the mirror)

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 4 points 5 months ago

That's me being able to play 7 instruments but refusing to treat the guitar as a musical instrument because my brain thinks I should just be able to play it.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 6 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

What if I'm an actual impostor tho? How would I even know? Everything, my life, reality, it's all a big lie!

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I'm still relatively new to my role and struggled in the last couple of weeks. So, I've started using AI at work and so far, it's good at doing the most menial document editing tasks which collectively takes up too much time. Then it occurred to me, maybe my colleagues are doing the same to try to look competent. I also discovered shortcuts on my own to do certain tasks on documentation, even though it's risky but I always doublecheck the work. And then it dawned on me, maybe my colleagues also discovered the same techniques but won't say it as well, because it's risky.

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 months ago

Message received. I need to go use ChatGPT, too!

[–] standarduser@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I don’t think anyone is using ChatGPT to drive a walmart van

[–] Klear@quokk.au 3 points 5 months ago

I'm not very good at writing code, but I'm really good at impostor syndrome, maybe among the best!

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

If only I was as good at discretely impostering as that guy.

[–] fubarx@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

And some day, we'll be working for that person.
