What's it going to do, ask for your dob during setup? Ohno!

Pretty sure he's also a genocide defender, and we at least know his pedo-founded employer (maybe former employer until very recent) is, so this makes sense. Imagine implementing tech to find out if someone is underage while it is discovered your company's founder was a pedo.

Let's not play that 'pretty sure' card here, provide actual information links supporting your position, or just shut the fuck up.

I see I've pissed off fans of minor tracking & defenders of those that remained silent as Minorhard was assisting Israel in genocide. Silence is complicity & if there are no comments by Pottering as he was working for one of the largest companies helping the Nazis in their modern day holocaust, then that tells you all you need to know.

I'm only upvoting this to help visibility to others that sort/browse by Hot/Top/Popular or whatever.

This is a disgrace to Linux!

https://agelesslinux.org/

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Why is it a disgrace? Systemd is open source; you can fork it to ignore the field, or hard-code the value if you want.

This lets OS vendors/developers distribute Linux Oses that want to support this in countries that demand it, after which anyone can modify it however they want.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Yeah that sounds fun, read through a million lines of code to tweak a few constants and variables, because you can't access the internet anymore to research the code before you fix the code yourself?

What's the end game here?

[–] chisel@piefed.social 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

How did you obtain your linux install media without internet? And why did you choose one that doesn't already have it disabled? And why would you ever put your real dob into it?

End game is to keep systemd OSes legal, even in stupid countries.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago

I obtained my Linux install media before this shit came into question. My current daily laptop runner is Linux Mint MATE 20.3 Una.

I don't exactly reinstall or update every time updates come out, I wait and see..

And yes, my distro uses systemd, but I ain't about to update what works for me until I sort out the fallout of all this shit.

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

That's...

That's how open source software works

Somebody noticed their boot time was very slightly longer so they read through a million lines of code and found the zx exploit.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago

True, but I don't exactly have a spare system to experiment with like that, and I ain't about to mess with my stable Linux Mint laptop all that much.

Though agelesslinux definitely seems like a fair game tweak script..

Look, if an admin-editable "birthdate" field is the extent of the required OS-level age verification API, then whatever. I can just set it to Unix time 0 and not worry about it.

Parents can, in theory, just set up a user account for their kid with an appropriate age (birth year is plenty of granularity, just put 1/1 as the day) and get any "protections" websites want to implement.

I would prefer this over a face scan or drivers license photo any day, because ultimately it's still 100% in control of the person who owns the hardware

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago (3 children)

If everyone punches 1/1 as birthdate, then their stats literally flag you as a risk and probably lying about your age, because so many others followed this otherwise simple advice.

You'll get flagged quicker than anyone as a suspicious person.

Who's "they" in this scenario? Since the details being stored here are entirely private and local to the system.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

If hackers have shown us anything, is that unless you totally cut the cord and run your system in a Faraday cage, then nothing is truly local to your system, and hackers will target said data.

And that's assuming big corporations aren't already targeting said data. You do trust big corporations right? Right? /s

[–] The_Decryptor@aussie.zone 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Ok, well the other details I've got on my computer are my banking details, my credit card details, all my OTP codes and all my account passwords for every service I use alongside my SSH keys to access my VPS.

And I'm not sure EndeavourOS is that big a company, I'm not actually sure they are a company.

But sure, they can know I'm 38.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago

They still make paper checks you know right?

I haven't had any bank account for the past 11 years.

Wonder why? TurboTax direct deposit was refused from my bank.

[–] TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

all those downvotes but you're right

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago

Better off using a more or less random date, or perhaps February 30th...

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 0 points 6 months ago

that's why I put in my dads birthdate, he dead, I can remember it. I use it everywhere now that's not a bank or my government

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago

Here ya go, fuckit, you get my real name. I died in 1955...

Oh, no. That's just what it is today. Are you new here?

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Guess how many people were born April 20th, 1969.

[–] ShankShill@sh.itjust.works 0 points 6 months ago

That's pre-Unix time!

[–] hraegsvelmir@ani.social 0 points 6 months ago

Eh, unless this is a module that one can opt out of, I'll just go back to using a different init system. Hopefully, enough other people do the same, and devs realize this is a step incompatible with the motivations many have for using Linux and FOSS projects more generally.

[–] CovfefeKills@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago

I wonder if this is all going to end on negative privacy. Like the last thing we have left is just to put it all out there so everyone has access to everyone's data and no single organization can use it for leverage.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago

a pretty neat virus would just set everyone's birthday to 20/04/1969
