People. Use protection, please! And if you're very active with multiple partners, get tested frequently. It's not rocket science. We're in 2025, this really shouldn't be happening.

Especially with how easily it spreads through oral, how women rarely get symptoms, and how it can appear no disappear for long periods before resurfacing randomly

It also spreads via hands (and toys). Getting tested is pretty important.

VDs have become much more rare than when I was teen. Hell, crabs are damned near extinct. I think we've collectively slacked off on protection.

Remember, Folks. Flies attract disease, so keep yours closed.

(or use protection.)

Good you added that bracket otherwise it sounds a lot like abstinence advocation.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

The problem with abstinence isn’t that it doesn’t work.

It’s that people are horny and simply don’t abstain.

I remember, when I was a kid, of a bunch of ads on TV raising awareness and medical professionals would visit schools to teach stuff. And you could get free condoms in events and medical facilities. Those campaigns were not only about STDs, also about a bunch of other health related stuff, from driving safely to using floss and recycling.

I don't see those any more. I talk to people that never heard of those campaigns, and some are afraid to "look like a sailor" for carrying a condom.

I think the last campaign I remember in Canada was "Plenty of Syph", a fake dating website where people's profiles would show different stages of the disease. You can see a postmortem here https://zgm.ca/work/ahs-plenty-of-syph/ A broken version of the site is available with Wayback Machine https://web.archive.org/web/20111223055933/http://www.plentyofsyph.com/.

The spectre of untreatable STD's is gonna rear its ugly head again.

Complacency? I thought it comes from fucking around.

It's very convenient that Finland is in Europe.

yle is a finnish broadcaster, so they're probably just saying "hey you're not immune from this, it affects you too"

That's not nearly as much fun
