Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Is using OCI containers as a security barrier a bad idea? (lemmy.ml)

I'm no expert but my mental model of containers was different in that I thought containerized processes live in somehow separate environments, at least filesystem- and network-wise.

I run self-hosted services in containers on my server to isolate them from each other, and now and then binaries I don't fully trust (things like suspected slop code or not well known python libraries) in containers on my laptop.

Does someone with more technical knowledge about how containers work feel like explaining whether that is a bad idea and if so why? That would be highly appreciated.

Edit 2: I would like to thank everyone who took the time to reply. My key take aways are that I will move my self-hosted services into VMs for proper isolation, but that it's probably fine to use a container when I want to make sure an LLM doesn't accidentally rm -rf my laptop system when it gets stuck.

Blindly trusting anything as a security barrier is a bad idea. That being said, there is a growing view among security professionals that containers are not sufficient protection against malicious code because it can directly attack the host kernel. This is not a new problem which is why most, if not all commercial container hosts have always used virtual machines to isolate containers from their bare metal systems.
