So you mean to tell me they had the technology the whole time to make upgraded modular chips and sell them for pre-existing computer architecture but chose not to because they knew people would pay for the shiny new toys.

There's a chip crisis and SUDDENLY!!!!!! We're all able to use new technologies on old computer architectures.......

Call it supply and demand but I think that's fucked up nm which way you look at it.

I read that and then immediately thought to myself, so they just chose not to release upgrades for old architectures and speed released a shit load of new hardware they knew people would pay OTA for.

This whole time they could've actually been making old computers better than they are and make it so the consumer didn't have to spend a fuck load on upgrades but waited till a chip shortage to do it.....

AI bubble popping would almost immediately crash the pricing. All AI earmarked hardware would be suddenly fair game, any hardware in the datacenters would be sold off, and you would see a dramatic rise in availability.

So yeah, you can absolutely see things getting cheaper.

Except most of that data center hardware is designed for only it. Think GPUs with no video output, rack mounted liquid cooling, etc. There is very little reusable.

If there's loads of crazy GPUs sitting around for low prices i'd bet people would create adapters for home use. Even if it can only be used for AI, we'd be in the golden age of local inference.

The only things a consumer would likely want is the RAM and storage, I will agree. But the immediate drop in demand for AI hardware would pivot a good portion of production back to consumer hardware.

And that isn’t including the fact that businesses and home labbers would love to get their hands on pretty much anything they’d be casting off.

Let's hope that wanting to further humanity will cause that bubble to burst. You know what I think though, I think they'll milk it for all it's worth and they'll use every single tactic to try to make people think it's safe when it comes to the appreciation (used in mental health terms of: Appreciation in mental health refers to the cognitive and emotional process of recognizing, valuing, and feeling thankful for the meaningful aspects, people, or experiences in one's life) of humanity.

In reality AI has never experienced humanity only knows how to react to it and in reality AI will never be able to experience our humanity and trying to allow it to or trying to get there, is not only expensive but it's dangerous and as smart as you have to be to get it to work, you'd also have to be the worlds biggest dumbass. If there's a team of people out there right now trying to make it work, they're fucking idiots because they're using their intelligence on a gamble and smart people don't gamble on theory, yes they test the waters on experimentation but usually for the greater good of humanity like trying to cure a virus but if the price is humanity, if the cost is our planet...... It's not intelligence, it's haste.
