I haven't used ext4 for a couple of years. Does it really have any advantages over xfs and btrfs?

For root drives (where recovery may be required) and database drives it still serves a purpose, IMHO.

It is the fastest, nothing more

No transparent compression is important too, you will need more storage than when using BTRFS with zstd compression

Also no deduplication, so again more storage
