We're perfectly aware that Russia is capitalist, it gets no more credits than Germany for its communist past. The reason it receives critical support is because it's opposing the US, and the US hegemon falling is pretty much the gateway to socialism worldwide.

We're so clear about it that I don't even understand how you could possibly think we support Russia because we think it's still socialist?

Russia is not an hegemon, it does not project power enough to be considered as such. But it will have to fall, like any capitalist state.

From a strategic POV, this would ideally happen after the fall of the US or their position as global hegemon. As it stands, even if we hope for the eventual fall of capitalist Russia, it's still a force against the US, hence the critical support.
