border agents repeatedly demanded access to his phone and told him they did not need a warrant.

The US is lawless, so the Constitution does not matter, but without a warrant they had no legal claim whatsoever to the phone or its contents.

That seems to be the current line of defense — no legal claims means the owner can delete what they want to delete

Usa is a tool for criminals to use... Globally.
