Is the original joke that Evanescence is actually still popular in rock, so asking makes you look silly?

Evanescence literally had two #1 hits over the past two years.

People who listen to rock music have definitely heard of Evanescence.

I wouldn't say definitely based on hits charts: people can be pretty unaware of culturally significant bands quite easily by only using streaming services...

News this year was that Billboard stopped counting YouTube streams because Google was trying to throw their weight around to affect the charts. Which I thought was interesting.

They're on tour in the US right now. I see merch everywhere, and on the rare occasion that I listen to the radio, they still pop up.
