If wasteful spending and fossil fuels become more expensive, less people can afford them, thus being more careful with their spending. Alternatives like electric vehicles and nuclear power become more desirable, and efficiency overall increases.

Oh yea I agree that it's going to have a negative impact on people's immediate quality of life. But the short term bad financial consequences are going to be much better than the long term bleed of growing emissions and climate change. We are terrible at perceiving external slow changes, so it's better that we experience the volatility of a dirty source of energy quickly.
