the problem is that, on the path we're currently on, if nothing changes, we end up like china or russia or even worse, under complete control of the state, no freedom of speech, no freedom of the press, every word you say scrutinized, people disappearing without a trace, no due process, no "innocent until proven guilty"-- all of that shit we've grown up with and taken as a given in life--goes away.
or we may end up like iran-- trying to fight for change, and getting massacred by our own government.

how many things have happened that "would never happen here"...
They don’t even need a real incident. They could always stage one once the tension is high enough. A stray shot from the crowed, an injured officer and the whole thing escalates. They might even pin it on a strong opposition leader while they are at it.
