Morons. Or rather, they think we are morons, and are betting they'll somehow make enough money to survive so literally don't care if the planet burns.
I highly doubt they actually believe that AI/LLMs are able to solve major challenges facing humanity. I don't think they even believe in AGI as marketed (see Microsoft's and OpenAIs definition of AGI; any ML tech that brings $100 B in annual revenue).
Before tech didn't use much electricity, so pretending to care about climate change was an easy, no cost, PR win.
But now things have changed with LLMs et al. requiring stupid amounts of electricity, so they've decided to modify the PR copytext
