That's what MAGAs do: they'll ask you to be extremely polite and civil, reproach your jokes and ask for human compassion while burning crosses at your door.
They do incrementally worse things while criticizing any over reaction. It's literally what Putin does geopolitically. Enough to make progress but always under the threshold of a meaningful response. Incremental changes are much easier to accept than big moves. Its only when they are confident or desperate that a big move happens.
