A user on the VRC forum posted a few weeks ago that they had made (with AI) patches for Proton that lets VRC access camera.

They've published their custom build onto github, you can get the latest tar.gz release and unpack it into ~/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/ (different for flatpak install, see the repo readme), then restart Steam, set it to run VRC with the new proton you just added, and tada :3

Not gonna lie, feeling pretty vindicated right now. Persona's source code was just accessed and reviewed, and inspection showed that there are backdoors through their entire system for several different justice agencies. I haven't read through the entire article yet, only up to section 0x0A, but this is a nightmare.

To give some examples, users of Persona are gauged by, "Is this person a politically exposed person," comprehensive profiles of their users identifying information, scans against photos scraped from the internet to match if you are the one in that photo.

I know, the mentality "They already know everything about you" is out there, but dude this is really, really bad. Worse than what I was imagining, and everyone who used Persona for verification has just given their service all these connections.

Guys why is it so hard to make friends in this game? It's even hard to just find someone to talk to! Is it just me? Or because I'm new? Or I'm missing something here?

Honestly impressed with the production value on this. Looking forward to more episodes!

Volare began with a script for infinite movement‚ letting players loop endlessly in any direction․ Then came velocity limits and of course‚ open flight․ Clouds and fog helped to make the world feel seamless․ Over time it became something bigger with dynamic time progression‚ shifting weather‚ hidden discoveries‚ collectibles‚ and dozens of islands to explore․

It works on PCVR and Standalone/Android VR.

However you spend your time here‚ whether it's just chatting and relaxing or taking flight‚ I hope you enjoy your stayǃ And if you're a completionist, don't worry, progress is persistent, so you don't have to do everything in one go.

Check it out!

I was comparing the VRChat and Resonite trailers and noticed VRChat remade their trailer. I was reminded that I should probably yt-dlp the trailers so I can hoard them, >:3 I found out the new one was completely taken off the store page. I was able to get a copy poking around archive.org long enough. I have no clue why it was taken down!

The Reality of Hope is a new short film about Hiyu and Photographotter’s journey. The documentary explores the dynamics between them as well as the challenges of traveling halfway around the world to make the surgery happen. Through each obstacle presented, the two friends are buoyed by the VR community and each other. Joining their journey is director Joe Hunting and producer MaxFilms. Hunting previously captured VR stories of friendship with We Met In Virtual Reality in 2022. His experience filming people connecting online and offline resulted in another effort that's been selected by Sundance for the year. Hiyu and Photographotter cross the boundaries of reality within the documentary to show their true selves throughout. Hunting considers this to be pivotal in the work, and it is a line he didn’t cross in We Met In Virtual Reality, which aired on HBO Max.

VRChat credits buy avatars made by a new group of creators skilled in the art of virtual reality fashion. The new system allows users to try on sellers' avatars in a private space before buying. "The Marketplace is an in-client store that allows users to buy and sell avatars," a VRChat representative explained over email. "Not only does this give creators another platform to monetize on VRChat, but it also makes finding an avatar far, far easier than before."

A new open beta for VRChat introduces a number of new features for testing, including remote control drones and a desktop selfie camera.

The drone feature is available to test for members of the service's paid subscription program, VRChat+. Controls should be familiar to those who fly these types of remote control aircraft with a floating screen showing views from the drone and a pair of control sticks.

Another feature in active testing now is "selfie expression" for desktop-based VRChat+ subscribers to use with a webcam and basic face tracking. VRChat's head of community Tupper called the feature "surprisingly effective" as it allows people using VRChat without a headset to express themselves in similar ways as if they had a VR headset on with face and eye tracking.

The latest beta also includes a dolly for long steady camera shots moving along a rail with adjustments for zoom, speed, focus and more. This feature is also gated behind the VRChat+ subscription.

Additional features in open testing, and not requiring a subscription, include turning off specific features in an instance like emoji, stickers, sharing pedestals, prints, and drones. VRChat also updated the user interface.

Stickers

Stickers have been added to VRChat as an exclusive VRChat+ feature! Users with VRChat+ can now place stickers in any* world. You can upload stickers using the VRChat website, or by taking a picture and selecting it as a sticker in the VRChat client.

You place stickers by using the option in your Action Menu! As a note to those who were in the beta: you'll find on live, the Action Menu has a combined submenu for Stickers and Emoji, instead of one for each. You can have 9 stickers active at any given time (as in, stickers useable in your Action Menu). You can place one sticker in the world at a time. Stickers are only available in worlds that have them enabled -- although the feature is enabled by default. World creators who hate fun have a specific artistic vision they want to maintain can choose to disable them on the website. You can click on them to disable them, if you see one you don't like. You can also choose to report them if they're offensive or otherwise break our ToS. For more information, you can check out the Developer Update here!

Sharing

Sharing has been added to VRChat as an exclusive VRChat+ feature! With sharing, you can easily share (surprise!) stickers, emoji, photos, and UI color palettes to other users. You can do this either by directly sharing them via the Main Menu, or you can choose to drop a pedestal that will enable you to easily share stuff with folks in your world!

Using the menu, you can directly share stickers, emoji, photos, and UI color palettes with anyone on your friends list. If you use the pedestal, you can choose if it's only visible to certain groups. You can also choose how long the pedestal lasts in the world. Pedestals can be hidden and are affected by avatar hiding settings (so they'll disappear, for example, if they're outside whatever range you've set under avatar culling). You can choose to hide them completely, if you'd rather not see them.

Spookality, our annual Halloween-themed jam, returns!

Every year, Spookality allows us to highlight some of the most talented creators in VRChat. From October 1st to October 14th, you can submit your avatars and worlds for consideration.

We will pick the winners on October 14! The best worlds will be featured in VRChat’s main menu, and the best avatars will be in the default VRChat home world.

The theme of our last jam, “Summer Music Fest,” was very broad. You gave us feedback that you wanted something a little more special: Only people who submit entries related to the theme can win prizes. We like this idea, so let’s try it this year!

We also heard that you’d like to be able to split the digital prizes with your collaborators. This is now also possible for up to four collaborators! So, if you have a team of three and you would like to split the one year of VRC+, you would get four months each. For the pins, however, we can only send to one person. I don’t think you want us to chop up poor little VRCat!

Please make sure your email associated with your VRChat account is up to date! We will be reaching out to you through your email to coordinate physical merch prizes this year.

Before submitting, please take some time to review our Official Contest rules as well as our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. The submitter must also have the rights to use the content submitted (including all component parts and any referenced intellectual properties).

Any content violating the above rules won’t be selected!

Additionally, all content submitted must make use of VRChat SDK3 to be qualified for submission. Worlds must use VRCSDK3 for worlds and avatars must use VRCSDK3 for avatars. While the use of more advanced features within the SDK (such as Avatar Dynamics) is recommended, it is not required!

Your content must have been uploaded after submissions have opened (October 1st).

“But what’s the theme?” you may ask.

In Spookality 2024, there are three categories: one for avatars, and two for worlds.

Summer Music Jam Winners!

The Summer Music Festival Jam winners are here!

As a reminder, the Summer Music Festival Jam was open to world and avatar creators, encouraging both to create content that was season-appropriate, full of vibes, and accessible to our entire community.

You can find a list of all the world and avatar winners here 1. Alternatively, you can check out the default home world to see them, too! Speaking of Summer Music Jam…

What’s a bunch of party worlds without a party?

We’ll be hosting a music event in one of the winning worlds featuring DJs from the VRChat dev team! You can catch the event on August 26 from 5PM PDT/8PM EDT to 8:45PM PDT/11:45PM EDT! To get into the event, you’ll have to join the Ministry group 3. Big thanks to them for helping us host this event!

(You’ll also be able to find it on vrc.tl 7 – which, by the way, is an incredible resource for seeing what music events are going on in VRChat on any given day!) VRChat Creators Roadmap is Updated for August 2024!

It’s almost autumn! Time for an updated roadmap for Avatar and World creators.

Since our May 2024 roadmap, we’ve shipped 7 out of 13 of the announced features for creators. Not bad!

Now, of course, it’s time to look to the future.

You can find the full roadmap here 45. Go check it out! Avatar Size Limit Enforcement

We’ve been talking about avatar size limits for a bit! They are now enforced by the latest SDK release. If you try to upload an avatar that breaks our maximum download or uncompressed size limits, it will tell you and prevent you from uploading it!

In the next week or so, we’ll start enforcing this server side. That means that even folks on older versions of the SDK will no longer be able to upload avatars that break the limits.

The final step to this plan will roll out on November 1st. On or around that day, we will change it so avatars over the size limit will no longer load in VRChat, even if they were uploaded before the limits were in place.

There’s also Creator documentation that discusses this!

Last week, we released 2023.3.1!
