It is rare for a centerback to be the star of a team’s offensive showing, but on Friday night in Commerce City, Co., Kennedy Wesley was that centerback for the U.S. women’s national team in the team’s 3-0 victory over Japan. Amidst a veteran lineup that vastly improved the offense, the young defender shone bright in just 45 minutes.

Head coach Emma Hayes went with a blend of her two previous lineups on Friday, mixing a few younger players in with some of her most experienced players like Sophia Wilson, Trinity Rodman, Lindsey Heaps and Rose Lavelle. As a result, the offense looked significantly better than it did on Tuesday in Seattle. The Americans forced Japan’s goalkeeper into several saves and created a lot of good opportunities, just missing the finish.

A narrow victory like the U.S. women’s national team’s 1-0 win over Canada on Wednesday can often leave players wanting more.

But for head coach Emma Hayes, it was the best place for the team to be following its second match of the 2026 SheBelieves Cup.

“I love winning football matches like this, still on a knife edge at one-nil,” Hayes said.

Despite facing its longtime rival, the U.S.’s primary foe in Columbus, Ohio, was more so itself than Canada, as several rushed passes led to missed chances. Otherwise, the USWNT dominated over two-thirds of possession and outshot Canada threefold with 18 attempts to six. By the time Canada earned its second corner, the U.S. already had 10.

The USWNT is solidly in the driver’s seat to take home the 2026 SheBelieves Cup. After making easy work of Argentina, the Stars and Stripes passed their biggest test in the tournament beating Canada 1-0. While the matches so far have seen the USA play dominant soccer, there has been something missing. The wins against Argentina and Canada had the quality of a team that can crush an opponent’s spirit by not letting them hope to score, much less win. What’s been absent is the sense that the Americans can score at will regardless of how organized or physical a defense plays. Winning the tournament will be satisfying, doing it in a way that is devastating would be delightful.
