The most exciting thing to me out of today’s hardware announcement was how VALVE has apparently made a translation layer on the new VR device to run games & software on their ARM powered device.

This to me means that we now have a Linux OS that is ARM compatible.

We also have a translation layer akin to proton (FEX?) that is apparently capable at playing these games on an ARM device.

Anybody who got on the MacBooks ever since M1 came about knows how amazing ARM can be, a device that can be powerful while being extremely efficient. This is the future.

This is also why the AppleTV device is interesting, Apple has an ARM based device with Apple Arcade support targeting living rooms. At the same time getting AAA games developed for iPhone chipsets, the same chipsets used in their TV devices.

I think there’s a good chance that a steam deck sequel could be ARM based. I don’t know how long this could be with most of the public expecting a Steam Deck 2 by 2027/8. But it’s possible, and I’m probably more excited and connecting dots that aren’t there.

However, ever since I got the steam deck all I’ve really wanted it to be was more efficient. But I thought ARM for gaming was still a long way off. But here we are.

Thoughts?

From what I understand, the GabeCube comes with a dedicated WIFI 6 antenna for SteamController 2. But the SteamDeck also comes with wifi6.

Is it likely that, with an update, you could connect your current SteamDeck through the controller puck without needing to stream through your main wifi?

edit: I absolutely fumbled this post. It's the SteamFrame adapter that does wifi6, not the puck. I really meant to ask if you could use the SteamDeck with that like the headset.

“Obviously the Steam Deck's not our focus today, but the same things we've said in the past where we're really interested to work on what's next for Steam Deck… the thing we're making sure of is that it's a worthwhile enough performance upgrade to make sense as a standalone product,” Griffais explained.

“We're not interested in getting to a point where it's 20 or 30 or even 50% more performance at the same battery life. We want something a little bit more demarcated than that. So we've been working back from silicon advancements and architectural improvements, and I think we have a pretty good idea of what the next version of Steam Deck is going to be, but right now there's no offerings in that landscape, in the SoC [System on a Chip] landscape, that we think would truly be a next-gen performance Steam Deck.”

Griffais' comments might come as a disappointment to some given the capabilities of the aging Steam Deck. The handheld launched in February 2022, with the OLED model coming out November 2023. Steam Deck will soon be four years old, and while there is a long list of Steam Deck-verified games to play, it does struggle to run some modern PC games well. Indeed, in September 2023, Pierre-Loup Griffais told The Verge that the next Steam Deck was at least a couple of years away, which had some hoping for the next version in time for the holidays this year. Clearly, that won't happen.

Now the question is I always wanted to get a Steam Deck but hold off because it's like 4 years old now so it's it still worth?

Amongst the hardware announcements is this: SteamOS now utilises FEX which allows the Steam Frame to natively play x86 games (Windows games when also using Proton) on the onboard Snapdragon chip.

Obviously using ARM is advantageous and effectively required for VR hardware that wants to run things natively. But could this open the door to a Steam Deck that uses ARM64 instead of x86?

I’ve done this like 6 times, I download a game like fallout, spend 5 days modding it then just get bored and lose interest 😂.

Could I have maybe too many games installed and it’s making the others boring?
