Red Dwarf

To those who don't know, Rob Grant - one of Red Dwarf's two main writers - passed away recently on the 25th February. He had co-written every episode of Red Dwarf for the first six series. Rob had also worked on Spitting Image in the 80s and had written several Red Dwarf novels, including one that is set to be released on July of this year. Look out for Red Dwarf: Titan.

Last week I discussed a show that was as simple and gimmick-free as a sitcom could be. This time we’re going right the other way and entering rather specialised territory, a science fiction comedy with quite the hook: its cast of characters features only a single human being, the last one left alive in the universe.

As you might imagine, the creators of the show faced an uphill struggle getting their creation onto the air. Among their challenges, they had to cope with cripplingly small budgets, industrial action, a bemused crew, and prejudiced TV bosses who couldn’t seem to get past that dreaded label: sci-fi.

But for those who could see beyond the genre, a great sitcom was waiting for them, one that really wasn’t about space at all.

Are You Bring Served? used to air on PBS here after the local news and I watched it for years. Then one night Red Dwarf either replaced it, or came on after it. I was hooked from the first second. This was somewhere 89-91.

In 99 my ex and I had a kid and while pregnant and on my ex would only watch Red Dwarf. She had the box set, I think s1-7. She watched it so much I had to replace tapes for her. I got so sick of the show I have only watched an episode here and there for the last 25 years.

A few months ago I signed up for BritBox so I could rewatch AYBS and Keeping Up Appearances, but ended up starting Red Dwarf again. Last night I got into s8 for the first time ever.

Co-creator of the cult hit sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, Rob Grant, has announced that he is currently working on a brand new prequel project, to be called Red Dwarf: Titan.

This comes after a legal dispute over the rights to the show was resolved earlier this year, with the show's co-creators, Grant and Doug Naylor, both being able to continue working separately on Red Dwarf in different media.

Shortly after this, Naylor said he thought the show was likely to return to screens at some point, adding that there's "real interest".

Naylor said: "Providing the boys are available, which isn’t the easiest thing because they’ve all got these mad schedules, especially Craig [Charles] and Robert [Llewellyn].

"But provided we can get everyone available and they do all want to be available, they want to make more, I think we’ve got a good chance."
