U Min Zin, a US citizen originally from Myanmar, was arrested by security forces on June 3 upon his arrival at the airport in the provincial capital Kunming. he was invited to attend an event hosted by a Chinese university there.

U Min Zin is a political science PhD candidate at the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests include civil-military relations, democratization and ethnic conflicts, with a focus on Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries.

As a student activist, U Min Zin joined the 1988 Democracy Uprising in Myanmar, and later went into exile to avoid arrest.

He founded ISP-Myanmar in 2016 and has written extensively on Myanmar’s politics, economy and international relations for The New York Times, Foreign Policy and other news outlets.

The military regime has reportedly massacred more than 40 civilians including children, women and monks during a 20-day scorched-earth campaign in Magwe Region’s Pakokku Township within sight of the UNESCO heritage town of Bagan. Marauding soldiers looted and torched some 1,000 homes.

Article from 2014. Burma was under the rule of Thein Sein, the "reformist" civilian retired general who won the election in 2011 and opened up Burma to international trade, investment and tourism.

Mong La's formerly Maoist rulers have been smart in staying away from attention, agreeing to close the wild life market in 2016, and stayed shy of armed conflict and empire-building near-by armed groups have been engaged in. There are scant reports of what is going on in Mong La these days.
