This sounds goofy but it is absurdly effective. When you talk through a complex idea as if you’re teaching a very small child, your brain automatically breaks the information into simple steps, removes fluff, and connects the missing logic. You’ll instantly notice the parts you don’t actually understand, because you physically can’t “explain” them. It works for coding, finances, law stuff, medical instructions, even math. I’ve used it to prep for interviews and presentations. Talking out loud forces active recall, which is the most powerful memory tool humans have, and the imaginary kid removes pressure so you don’t freeze or overthink.

You remove embarrassment for both sides. It keeps the interaction smooth and respectful without making anyone feel bad.

We all know that one coworker who dumps their mess and expects you to clean it up. They want you to immediately drop everything and fix it for them.

Your job is to be helpful, but don’t be their crutch. The goal is to set boundaries that protect your time and guide them to self-solve.

Before you agree to help, try 1 of these tips instead:

  1. Ask clarifying questions: What did you try first?
  2. Coach, don’t cover: Point them to the right person or resource.
  3. State your priorities: I’d love to help, but my workload is heavy.
  4. Be concise: No, I can’t do that right now is sufficient.

Tell me, what's the absolute wildest story you have of a coworker dumping their mess on you?

I started only answering phone calls from numbers that are in my contacts list or that I recognize. I get tons of other calls, but I don't pick them up so they go to voice mail. If it's a valid caller, they will leave a message and I can call them back. Most of the time, a scammer won't bother with leaving a message. They will just move on to the next number on their list and I don't have to deal with them.

I’ve struggled with hyperhidrosis on my hands for a while, and it’s affecting everyday tasks. I’ve read about iontophoresis treatments. Anyone had experience with these or other remedies?

Standard LED bulbs put out an enormous amount of RF interference.

For 10+ years I've been dumbfounded on why my garage door opener remote would work from 80ft down the street, but fail to work when I'm 10ft away in the driveway trying to leave.

Then a light bulb went off. Literally. And the remote was able to close the door. I removed the LED bulbs, replaced with incandescents and haven't had a problem since!

You can buy LED bulbs made specifically for garage door openers, but I haven't tried those yet!

That imaginary “better partner” you’re picturing? They’ll drain you too; probably faster. You’ve already done years of emotional heavy lifting with your current one. Starting over just means redoing all that work from zero, but this time while older and more tired.

If you’re burned out, take a break, get some air, find your balance. Divorce isn’t a shortcut; it’s just a restart with a new tutorial level.

The common advice is to "consult your mortgage documents" to see when you can remove PMI. But even easier - just give your mortgage company a call and politely ask to remove PMI. They'll tell you if you can't.

I just called the second bank that purchased our mortgage. Unlike the first bank, they didn't require an appraisal to verify equity. Looking at nearby properties for sale, I'm not 100% sure we would have passed the appraisal. The call took less than 60 seconds and now I'm saving $130/month.

Unfortunately, if you have an FHA loan, you might not be eligible to remove PMI. But otherwise - it's a quick phone call and you might be pleasantly surprised!

EDIT: This is specific to the USA.

Capsaicin is soluble in oil, so if you add extra oil to your dish the excess capsaicin will dissolve into the oil.

This works best for soups and stews. Stir the oil (about 1/4 cup for a 2-4 person serving), simmer for a couple minutes then turn it down to very low and let the dish sit for a few minutes undisturbed. The oil will float to the top and can be skimmed off along with the capsaicin.

You can do this more than once for inedibly spicy dishes.

A quick two-line summary like “We agreed on X, deadline Y” helps keep everyone accountable and clears up confusion later. It takes two minutes and saves hours of back-and-forth later.

A few months ago I started doing a quick 1-minute breathing exercise before high-pressure situations like presentations, tricky emails, or code reviews.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Inhale for 4 seconds
  2. Hold for 4
  3. Exhale for 4
  4. Hold again for 4

It sounds simple, but it completely changes how focused and grounded I feel. It’s short enough that I can do it anywhere, even right before opening a meeting link.

At first, I used a timer I built to guide me through the counts (just a small side project), but now the rhythm is second nature. If you tend to jump straight into tasks without taking a breath, try this. It’s surprising how much clarity one minute can bring.

Original Title: LPT - If you add a dry paper towel to the top of your spring mix/spinach container, it prolongs its life by 1-2 weeks and stops it from getting soggy and wilting. Even better, add a paper towel to the middle layer, and another on top.

  1. Just because it’s free doesn’t mean you have to take it
  2. Just because it’s a good deal doesn’t mean you have to buy it
  3. Some things are too far gone to be donated and belong in the trash and that’s okay
  4. Ask yourself “do I have something at home that already fulfills this purpose?” before buying something new.
  5. Ask yourself “when would I use this? Where would I store this when I’m not using it?” Before buying something new
  6. If the leftovers are too old to eat today they’re DEFINITELY too old to eat tomorrow
  7. Just because it was a gift doesn’t mean you need to keep it forever
  8. Memories can still exist without objects attached to them
  9. Reducing waste starts with buying less, not with holding onto things indefinitely in the hopes you will someday use something

Before buying anything online - especially on Amazon, AliExpress, or other retailers - take 30 seconds to check its price history. Prices fluctuate constantly, and "limited-time deals" are often not deals at all.

Use one of these price trackers:

  • CamelCamelCamel - Amazon
  • Keepa - Amazon + variants
  • Pricearchive - AliExpress
  • Price com - Many retailers
  • Dekudeals - video game prices

They'll show you a product's price graph, past discounts, and even let you set up alerts when the price drops to your target level.

It's an easy win: smarter buys, more cash left over.

My clothes have been stained on more than one occasion by a hotel iron that spit out rusty steam or dark gunk. I now run the hot iron over a sacrificial towel and only move on to my clothes when I’m confident that the steam is clean.

Edit: as some have mentioned, if you find the iron with water already in it, make sure to drain it in the sink and then fill with fresh water before turning on. Also, make sure to hit the steam button numerous times as you’re going over the towel.

Phisical activity and exercising — but it can be any goal we want to make last — only work if it feels satisfying. So the hack is to set small achievable steps, celebrate every win and keep growing. Pleasure is what keeps us moving forward.

Even in nice hotels. I don't know why they don't make a point of locking the window before you get there, but, they do not.

I may be late to the party on this, but: nitrile gloves are amazing for dog fur removal. Trying to get your dog’s bed clean? Already tried the vacuum, tape roller, chom chom, etc.? Try grabbing a nitrile glove from your first aid kit, putting it on, and using that to scrape up the fur manually. When you get it all into a pile, grab it in the glove, and pull the glove off with the fur in it. Throw it away. Then get any straggling pieces with the vacuum or roller. Good luck, hope it works as well for you as it did for me. xoxo

My parents send my kids the birthday cards my grandparents sent me for that age with new messages written inside. An amazing way of building bridges across multiple generations.

Take a LOT of photos. Don't wait for them to pose. Start taking photos as soon as you get the camera. Usually the posed job is the least favourite photo.

Also, the last photo cut the heads off of the people in the photo. And then hand them the camera with the poor photo. I always get a laugh.

Be sure to add a towel or something to provide friction. But all of the soap film will come off and you don't need to buy a new one.

Next time you have a major life problem (a career decision, relationship friction, or a complex financial choice), stop using the word ‘I’ and mentally pretend the exact same situation is happening to your smartest friend.

Ask yourself: What logical, objective advice would I give them? Use "You" or their name during the entire reflection process. This technique bypasses the emotional biases of the self-advice paradox, forcing you to achieve the necessary psychological distance to think rationally and apply the wisdom you already possess. You are already wise, you just need the distance.

Maybe you're hoping to get a job offer. Or that your book will get a publisher by next year. Or your friend will finally return the money he borrowed so you can pay your student loan installment. Or that some other thing you're hoping to happen, will happen.

It's good to hope. What's not good is to make future plans based on the hopes you have for uncertain events. Because if and when it doesn't happen, you'll find yourself screwed.

So instead of planning your life ON uncertain events you hope will happen, plan around them. What if you don't get the job offer? What if the book doesn't find a publisher? What if your friend never returns the money?

How will you manage your situation then? Give your future self the gift of forethought. Regardless of what happens, you will rest easy knowing that you have planned for the uncertainty. And if you do find yourself in that unfortunate situation, you'll have a way out.

i used to spend hours setting up new productivity tools, thinking the next one would finally make me organized. what helped more than any app or system was just going back to simple lists.

make one for movies, one for restaurants, one for random ideas, and one for things you need to buy. that’s it. no fancy structure, no folders, no tags.

your brain doesn’t need another dashboard, it just needs fewer places to forget things.
