I’m trying to brainstorm ways I can prevent shrinkage for my wool and cotton sweaters. I see videos on how to do this after (hand) washing one sweater, wringing it within a towel, and then blocking the sweater to keep its shape. However, I don’t have the time (nor the space!) to be doing that for every single sweater.

What I want to do is:

  1. Quick wash for a load of laundry
  2. Hand up knits
  3. Somehow tie something heavy to the sleeves and bottom of the sweater to weigh it down/stretch it

But what can I do for this?

I was a dumby and put a small lid in a big frying pan and it totally vacuum sealed shut. 😂

y‘all. I tried everything. I tried heating the pan while putting ice on the lid. Banging the pan over some towels on the ground outside. Submerging it in water to get a little water inside and steam pop it open. Everything

BUT WHAT FINALLY WORKED:

I held the pan between my legs while sitting on the floor, put upward pressure on the lid (by pulling the handle) with one hand and banged around the pan edges (from the top of the pan, not the sides) with a meat tenderizer and BAM IT CAME OFF. I feel like any sort of heavy tool would work if you don’t have a tenderizer.

… Just in case anyone finds themselves in my situation. GIVE THIS A SHOT lol

Learned this trick in housekeeping for a very expensive resort.

Take a cotton cloth, preferably large like a towel, and get it wet enough to hold water but not dripping. Next you'll grab your household clothes iron and get it nice and hot. Make the stain somewhat moist so there's water involved there too. Place the towel over the stain of your ire and aggressively rub the iron over the stain. The stained material should essentially transfer to the cotton cloth as you iron over it. While you're doing this the cloth can become a bit dried out so either move a more wet portion of the cloth over the carpet or keep the cloth moist in order to continue using the steam. While the carpet is hot you can also move the cloth to position a clean portion over the stain then use your foot/shoe in a twisting motion to pull more of the stain out of the carpet.

In 30 minutes you could have a nice, clean carpet. This technique works best if it's a new stain ofc, if it's an older stain it may require repeated treatments. As a warning, this kills the cotton cloth of your choosing.

This approach dawned on me a couple of years ago, and has proven successful.

The two problems I encounter with leaf bags sitting waiting for collection are:

  1. They become uncrimped and the leafs blow or fall out
  2. Rainwater collects on the top, drains inside, and the bottom rots out.

If you store them upside down:

  1. Paper has memory for folds. After a day upside down the crimp is set into the bag and won't unfold
  2. The bottom of the bag has no opening and is dome-shaped, so rainwater just rolls off of it.
  3. If anything rots, it is the top of the bag, which is not that bad.

Hope this helps!

In Aus, wine stores like BWS sometimes sell reusable shopping bags with six little pockets on the sides for wine. Use it for carrying groceries. Pop the lighter items like herbs and cucumbers in the side pockets to stop them getting crushed.

(Extra life hack to go some way to not dying in the climate crisis: This way you also have less of a need for single-use plastic bags to contain vegies and herbs).

Myself and everyone I know got upgraded automatically to a Microsoft 365 plan which included AI extras and co-pilot as part of the upgrade, with a 25%-30% increase in either monthly or yearly price.

I only found out today from a reddit thread, that if you cancel the subscription, on the following page it gives you an option to subscribe to the classic plan instead. This is the only way to view the plan, it's hidden due to shady practices by Microsoft, which has landed them in hot water: https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1oi5or4/australia_sues_microsoft_for_hiding_cheaper/

My personal plan went from just over $10 a month to just over $7 a month. My parents saved £25 a year on the family plan too. Worth checking out!

My mother is in a home and keeps getting in trouble for calling 911. She doesn’t have dementia but is very paranoid. Does anyone have a solution that would reroute or keep those calls from hitting 911. Frankly, I wouldn’t care if the call wasn’t allowed to make outbound calls but could only receive calls. She has an iPhone and I did have raz mobility suggested to me but I’m concerned switching to an android device will be frustrating for her.

First time homeowner here, I live in a Condo and my upstairs neighbor's toilet leaked and got into my ceiling and my walls and caused around $4,500 worth of damages. My HOA has a waiver of subrogation which means my insurance can't go after my neighbor's insurance which meant I was out of a $1200 deductible.

I call my insurance after this is all over to see if If there's anything I can do to get a lower deductible in case something like this were to happen again. Turns out, when it came time for my policy renewal (which I ignored when I saw it in the mail), If I had increased my annual premium of $650 to $675, my deductible would have been CUT IN HALF TO $600.

TLDR: Don't wait until something happens to become aware of insurance policies. make sure you're getting a good deal!

I've tried permanent marker but it just keeps rubbing off after about two weeks even if I'm not touching the keys at all. I have about 15 keys across three keychains and need a good way to identify them without just trying all 15 keys on a single lock. Is there any way I can write on them that will last longer than two weeks?

Years of ignoring this platform for me to eventually realise Reddit is the more chilled, knowledgable, interesting cousin of the other toxic websites. An actual life hack.

In the last 12 months I’ve learnt to crimp network cables, how to navigate the stock market, had a structural engineer give me feedback on a new home purchase, discovered great new places to eat in my city and tonnes of other useful interactions.

I always find it amazing how complete strangers, some who are experts in their fields, will go out of their way to help/advise people like me who are complete newbies in their field and not expect anything in return.

I know it’s super cliche but a lot of people on here really do restore your faith in humanity, especially considering what a dark place the world is at the moment.

We moved into an apartment this September and there is this very bad smell that comes from fridge. The food and the containers I put in the fridge and freezer also smells same because of that. I have tried baking soda, bamboo charcoal, coffee grounds but nothing takes the smell away. I am desperate please help me.

For context I’ve always had quite an addictive personality; if I enjoy doing something, I want to do it more. That can obviously swing both ways and sometimes be massively beneficial if healthy and positive, but detrimental if not.

I was just wondering if anyone had any quick wins that they’ve used / found really useful for breaking a bad habit cycle. I often find myself addicted to the routine of doing something more than the act of it itself.

Could be smoking, drinking, eating certain foods, hanging around certain people, anything really - just looking to gain a bit of insight into how other people address something negative in their life and act upon it!

All you need to do is fill the cleaned container, handwashed, or paper towel and deteregent method cleaned rinsed container with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water. I prefer using grow shop 29% peroxide as it only takes about a 100ml and fill the rest with water. Then just let is sit on the counter for a couple of weeks.

Hello!

My non-foam bed is zippered in a mattress protector (work in social services and terrified of bed bugs) and I put a mattress protector over that because I had one and didn't want the plastic sound. I run hot with this set up. I only prefer this in the winter!

I've tried a wool mattress topper and run hot with that too.

Any ideas? I'm a side sleeper that needs a firm mattress and the zippered mattress protector is not an option to get rid of, unless there are ones that are breathable?
