Why does Korea only have those unofficial trashcans made of a plastic bag and some harder plastic poster bend into a circle?

There are no official normal trashcans provided by the municipality, and I always wonder who empties those makeshift ones.

I also wrote about the trash and recycle container situation in a blog post a couple of years ago: https://jeena.net/trash

Just got one of those alarms:

“From Friday, May 29 to Saturday, May 30, due to the Republic of Korea Air Force Space Challenge event, noise from Black Eagles aircraft flights is expected. Please be cautious of possible surprise or disturbance. [Gyeonggi Provincial Government]

And really every two minutes in the morning there was some airplane above us and quite loud.

I've always liked Makgeolli but lately my wife ordered a premium pack of them and a whole now flavor world opened.

Now we already drank 2 of the 5 bottles but this limited edition made me make this post. It's super thick and amazingly flavoufull. Also tastes quite strong. It's very different to what you get at the convenience store, I' surprised how different it is.

My wife said she wanted to buy some which would taste like in her childhood/teenage time, she says the normal ones taste somehow industrial.

I have to say the difference is like the difference between Terra and Chimay. Can only recommend. But it's fresh so can't really shipping it far, only good for 1-2 months it seems.

After traveling to Japan where solo dining always been a huge thing, when coming to Korea in 2015 I was very surprised. I came here with a friend who does not eat pork and that meant that for the whole 2 weeks I was not allowed to order anything pork either because every restaurant would only offer for at least two people.

I think it has changed now quite a bit but apparently not fully.

Super amazing website that contains descriptions of individual Korean buddhist temples, as well as specific architectural features and artwork.

Relevant for this community, because he describes various Korean folkloric deities:

Generally, you can find articles describing individual deities, folkloric, buddhist or otherwise in the section about artwork.

South Korea has leapfrogged the UK to become the world’s eighth-biggest stock market, fueled by a high-octane rally in its artificial intelligence-linked technology champions.

Bloomberg reported, the total market capitalization of Korean-listed companies has surged more than 45% this year to $4.04 trillion, while the UK’s has climbed about 3% to $3.99 trillion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The size of the UK market was about double that of Korea’s as recently as the end of 2024.

I asked my Korean PT if his other customers sweat as much as I do (they are all Koreans) and he said that I'm his most sweating customer.

The Samsung Phones have a really cool feature which is a automatic translation when someone calls you. It works like that it listens to what you say in English and translates it to Korean and reads it out aloud. Then it listens to what the other person says in Korean, translates it and reads it out aloud to you. And I believe it's fairly accurate, I tested it with my wife.

The problem is when someone calls you and hears a robot voice they immediately hang up, not even trying to listen to what the robot says.

How would you describe the current beauty standards in Korea, and in what ways do you feel they influence everyday life or people’s self‑image? Do you think these standards are changing with younger generations or social media trends? If you’re comfortable, I’d love to hear any personal experiences or observations you’ve noticed in your community.

Oh man every year it's so stressful because the login never want's to work for me. This year again I had to use the new Mobile ID with the QR code, because putting in my name with spaces didn't work. But that didn't help I got some error that it only works for individuals (I am a individual). Then I tried with the PASS app, had to reset it and set it up again because every time I want to use it I need to reset it for some reason, and that means to go through SMS and my Bank app for some reason. But that also didn't help, same error.

Then I remembered that I had a password for the hometax website and used it, once I logged in with that I had to log in again with the PASS app and suddenly it worked!!!1

And everything is in Korean and a lot of things put in as pictures so that the automatic translation doesn't work.

It's Sunday afternoon in January, I live close to a street with a lot of cafés and each and every one is full of people, mostly young women but also couples and mixed groups.

It's not that those cafés have amazing coffe, those are not coffe first cafés. In fact in this city I only found like 3 cafés which have outstanding coffe.

It's more about the culture meeting up and talking, etc.
