I wanted to check out some of the new, third-party hardware made for the Dreamcast recently. I bought a Retro Fighters D6 controller and an 8BitMods VMUPro. (Note: these may be in stock at other retailers, like https://stoneagegamer.com/ or https://videogamesnewyork.com/. 8BitMods ships from the UK, the others are from the US.)

The D6 is a wireless controller that works with the Dreamcast via controller port dongle. Also works with the Nintendo Switch, and PC with a USB dongle. I love this type of controller; most of the games I play these days can be played with just a d-pad and face buttons. The similar 8BitDo M30 has been my go-to controller for a few years now.

The VMUPro is like a nicer version of the original VMU. Works as a VMU, but has a higher resolution backlit screen, better battery life, more storage (takes a microSD card), and can also run apps specifically made for it. It even comes with emulators for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Gear, Master System and NES.

I haven't actually tried them out yet. I'll post some reviews later. I'm excited about these -- I haven't dusted off the Dreamcast in a while!

Hey y'all! Absolutely loving my dreamcast. I actually got several of them now for repair. Definitely my favorite system.

My question is, what video cable would you go with for it? Mainly I use it on a CRT with component and s video inputs but it only came with a composite cable. Should I shell out for component or is s video fine ?

I have a retro tink 2x on my crappy insignia as well, but I'll mainly use the DC on CRT.

Napple Tale was a game on the Dreamcast, now pretty much only playable via emulator.

It has a cutesy, robo-candy aesthetic, filled with bright, cheery colors, and dancy animation.

It is also a game for which the primary theme is 'coming to terms with the fact that time takes everything from us: family, friends, joyful times, and eventually even life itself.'

It is also soundtracked by Yoko Kanno (the woman behind the soundtracks for Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Wolf's Rain) and is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto. (If you are an old anime fan, you've pretty much definitely heard her voice, even if you don't know the name. She's the original and later Motoko Kusanagi.)

It's like it was written by Mary Shelley and then handed off to someone who had only worked on megaman and barbie games to do the visuals. Wild stuff.

Phantasy Star Online's December 2000 release capped a decade of Sega experimenting with online gaming on consoles.
