Episode 10: Blood for Blood

I invite you now here to the depths of Castle Delawney. Here in Gormalay in the Kingdom of Timmony. Our friends have been so successful up until this point.
To remind us how we came to this dark and dismal place; let's retrace our steps to see what choices we made that might've brought us here.
It all began with the death of our friend, Thjazi Fang. Betrayed as he was, by Casimir Gavendale, and for a moment we feared, the young brother of Teor (Talcydimir Pridesire). However, we discovered that young Cyd was still true of faith and convicted in his heart with loyalty, seizing the deed to Castle Sloak from the Crow Keeper tavern and making his way north. He followed him away from the funeral of Thjazi Fang (Thimble's beloved longtime partner in crime, Kattigan and Teor's beloved friend and former member of the Torn Banner and the target of the Lord Wicander Halovar's family) him and his aspirant (the demon tyranny). Moving through the Dahapshanee Wood (where you encountered the gnome Ulbid Morn and the faeries of Hawthorn's Glade). You made your way through the city of Arderin and up towards Sloak where you found that treacherous Casimir Gavendale and Thimble smote his ruin on the castle ramparts. You then discovered that the Tachonis envoys that had come and literally spanked Casimir Gavendale with a longsword lacerating his buttocks (such that an enterprising doctor had reason to get him alone in a room). You followed the Tachonis north believing that they had captured Cyd. With your vengeance taken on Casimir, it was the rescue of Cyd that loomed large in your mind's eye. What were the Tachonis doing in these lands? The regal-looking Lord Doset, his older sister (the skull-faced, tattooed Univere Tachonis) and their knight attendant of the vassal house of Seremai.
In these treacherous circumstances, you were glad for the companionshiop of your allies (the Hounds of the King who you met that took you up the Miller's Road) the Dame Morgaine and Sir Hawkins (speaking hounds in service to King Augustus Valian of Timmony; Old King Gus). They took you up the Miller's Road (a secret way by which these hounds-capable not only of speech but of spellcasting- were able to find that gave you safe passage) up through the lands to make your way to Tybry's Lea, the seat of the Earl of Gormalay.
On your way on the Miller's Road, you encountered the Black Rabbits (a group of outlaw faeries that gave you some news that apparently the House of Royce had fallen). Word had reached them through fae channels. It seems, indeed, as you have pursued, with some success, your aims that set you out on this path from Dol-Makjar (where your quest began) that indeed the brutal and at times savage world of Aramán turns even without your direct attention. Who knows what could have befallen the House of Royce?
Arriving in Tybry's Lea in the bright sun, you saw a realm of some pastoral beauty and grandeur, the beginnings of Candle Feast. Indeed, you can see that the Candescent Creed (that beloved religion of Wick's family) was preparing cookies and candles and paper lanterns. Children wiping snot from their face to talk to Thimble about what was going on in town. You found a young acolyte excitedly giving you news and a hospital working to help those affected by this Bellows Fever that seems to be spreading.
On your way discovering you've also met Felltower (another Hound of the King here in this place), and you discovered that it seemed the Tachonis were working out of Castle Delawney directly. Witnessing a sudden conversion of none other than the Earl of Gormalay (a lord of an entire region of the Kingdom of Timmony) to the Candescent Creed, walking amongst the people in mourning for his late lady wife. You used the distraction of this massive festival to get yourself in position. And using a Chanter's Egg that you had taken from your old friend Ulbid (the Gnomish astronomer) you invisibly made your way into the castle after Thimble very stealthily spied on the goings-on of the Tachonis (who seemed to be making a hasty retreat for reasons we cannot exactly say).
Wending your way into the smaller keep, you made your way downstairs where Kattigan spoke in the manner of a ranger to a rat who said that there were those of his kind that had gone into the dark of the dungeon and died without leaving a scent of rot. Whatever he meant, you could not say until perhaps it was too late as Tyranny (in disguise as Occtis Tachonis) rounding the corner discovers what a rat means when it says that one can die without rotting (for indeed, life does seem to end when one is turned to stone). Rounding the corner you see this knight of Seremai surrounded by guards of the House Tachonis with a basilisk on a chain, a monster of the world of Aramán (crystalline and stony spines arising from the bridge of its ugly snout and its arched back) as it's eyes gleam with white light.
Tyranny, as you begin to turn to stone, your 15 CON saving throw ends the effect! You're fine.

CRITICAL ROLE CAMPAIGN 4: Every New Character & Their Actor

article by Rotem Rusak

Critical Role‘s Campaign 4 is just around the corner. The fourth core chapter of the beloved TTRPG actual play series is on the way, and this time, it will be helmed by Brennan Lee Mulligan—yes, for the first time in 10 years, Matt Mercer won’t be the game’s Game Master, he’ll be in the player’s seat. Of course, he’s not the only one. Critical Role recently revealed an all-star cast of season D&D players who would be taking a seat at Campaign 4‘s table. But who they would play remained a secret… Until now. Critical Role Campaign 4 has officially revealed the character name and official character art for each of its 13 cast members/players. Let’s take a look at all the new adventurers we’ll meet in Aramán.

In Critical Role Campaign 4, the characters will be divided into three groupsOpens in a new tab: the Soldiers, the Seekers, and the Schemers. In short, the soldiers are “are the people who are interested in a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven story mode—where the non-violent answers were few and far between.” The Seekers are “people that tie directly into lore, cosmology, magic, big questions around problems facing this universe that are in the weave of the dance between divinity and arcane, and magic, and demons, and fairies, and dragons, and these big kinds of questions. It’s very classical fantasy.” And the Schemers are into “intrigue, espionage, skullduggery, and relationships with each other and other NPCs and instituations and the machinations of power. Their adventuring looks like cloak and dagger.”

We believe that the Soldiers will wear orange/red. The Seekers will wear blues and purples. And the Schemers will wear teal/green.

Matt Mercer Will Play Sir Julien Davinos. If we’re correct in our estimations, Matt Mercer’s character will be one of the soldiers. Sir Julien Davinos also appears to be a human fighter or maybe a rogue.

Travis Willingham will play Teor Pridesire. He seems to be a Leonin paladin or maybe a monk. We believe Travis Willingham’s character will be part of the Seekers.

Laura Bailey will play Thimble, who seems like she belongs to the Schemers group if her grin is anything to go by. We think Thimble is likely a fairy rogue.

Taliesin Jaffe will play Bolaire Lathalia. If you ask us, Bolaire Lathalia is Jigsaw from the Saw movies OR perhaps a changeling warlock, we’ll take either. Taliesin Jaffe’s character looks to be part of the Soldiers in Critical Role Campaign 4.

Ashley Johnson will play Vaelus, who appears to be a drow cleric or sorcerer. Ashley Johnson’s character looks like they belong to the crew of Seekers in Critical Role Campaign 4.

Liam O’Brien will play Halandil Fang. Halandil Fang is a future Tusk Love cover model and/or/plus a half-orc bard. We love him already. We bet Liam O’Brien’s character joins the Soldiers in Critical Role Campaign 4. He is giving Chris Pine in the Dungeons & Dragons movie.

Marisha Ray will play Murray Mag’nesson who appears to be a dwarven wizard or maybe a bard. We’d bet that Marisha Ray’s character will join the Schemers.

Sam Riegel will play Wicander Halovar who looks like a aasimar wizard or maybe a cleric. Sam Reigel’s character will most likely be a Schemer if his outfit has anything to say about it.

Luis Carazo will play Azune Nayar coming across as a human paladin and definetly a Soldier.

Robbie Daymond will play Kattigan Vale who looks like a human ranger or maybe a druid or barbarian. We’re into his vibes. We’re also into Robbie Daymond’s character seemingly being a Seeker.

Aabria Iyengar will play Thaisha Lloy who seems to be a half-orc sorcerer or warlock. Aabria Iyengar’s character looks like she’ll be part of the Soldiers in Critical Role Campaign 4.

Whitney Moore will play Tyranny who looks like a tiefling cleric or maybe something unexpected like a monk. We feel like Tyranny is absolutely a Schemer.

Alex Ward will play Occtis Tachonis. Occtis Tachonis reads like a human artificer/alchemist to us. We bet that Alex Ward’s character will be a Seeker based on their mystical-looking pets. These cuties could be his familiars or maybe homunculi. He could also be a reanimator artificier, one of the Unearthed Arcana classes from D&D.

Episode 7: On the Scent

Your footsteps led you down from the fireworks and goat-protected walls of Ulbid's observatory, where he keeps an eye on the magical happenings of the Stormwrack, but also on travelings of the road (the banner of the king headed south, just as Casimir Gavendale (that worm!) heads north! That sonovabitch! You killed our friend and he was your friend! That's the worst kind of killing my friend!). Cyd made his way through the forest, but on foot versus Casimir's carriages (and through the dense forest against Casimir traveling on the King's Road). You have to wonder if Cyd (even if he makes it out of the Dahapshanee Wood) won't have a trap waiting for him on the other end of the forest (and indeed, it was that premonition within a crystal that Thimble saw).
You made your way to Hawthorn's Glade (found at the edge by Hawthorn herself and some of her glade's finest warriors). You were saved in the nick of time by Wicander Halovar's unlikely summoning of the light. And you made an impression on Hawthorn. You made more than an impression on Shuffa (a Shambling Mound, who appears to, with no central nervous system, to still be possessed of a religious conviction in your sacredness).
You saw the glade of faeries that have fled in danger (and in some cases, it seems, persecution, perhaps even at the hands of the Candescent Creed, if that grasshopper fae can be believed).
You also met Sallow (a hag who betrayed the secrecy of the glade) to tell you that yes, Cyd not only was here, but had been sent to his death at the Wraith's Tree. A terrible plan, but one that the fae had made to keep their glade safe (by feeding those mortals that had found their glade to the wraith) such that more undead would patrol the woods at night and keep people far from this place.
You made quick work of the wraith animated within the tree and even sending it back to the underworld with a
Divine Smite. The tree began to summon it back before Thimble could douse it in Kattigan's oil and set it alight.
As the zombies disanimate all around you, it is to this moment that we return as fire fills the forest around you. Flickering fire as the tree goes up. It is bright as day here in the dark forest. This tree sputters, and though you do not actually believe it to be fundamentally supernatural, the oil of the dead tree pops and screams as the wood splits in the flame. The steam escapes and hisses with these loud, shrill cries. As you are surrounded by (in Tyranny's case, a kind of comforting) hellfire, looking around, seeing the most freshly dead are indeed closest to the tree, you can breathe a sigh of relief that Cyd's body is nowhere to be found.

Episode 6: Knives and Thorns

Welcome back to Critical Role Campaign 4 here at the Soldiers' Table. Our soldiers happened to spend last episode finding, not a fight, but friendship with several wonderful inhabitants of the Kavrosi Mountains north of Dol Makjar (where you headed out).
We met the scoundrel Abalang Howl, an orcish-dwarven smuggler who was hanging up at a gibbet outside the Black Heron Tavern not too far outside of town (with his high spirits but more importantly higher altitude hanging in that cage). He had to get the hell out of there and you guys were happy to help him both to get "someone who might talk" out of your hair and also to get some information about the fact that Casimir Gavendale (the man responsible for the death of Thjazi Fang) is making his way north. It seems that Casimir's betrayal may in fact have bought him a life of unimaginable luxury. No good deed goes unpunished and no betrayal goes unrewarded.
Making your way instead where you thought more likely that Cyd would have traveled (knowing your brother, you took a risk heading into the Dahapshanee Wood given that you couldn't exactly know for sure where his tracks were) and you went to the one place that (due to Kattigan's skills in the forest) you could move faster through than anybody pursuing you. You might think you're the caboose in this train of Casimir chasing Cyd and you guys chasing Casimir, but we all know who's abandoned the Sundered Houses recently and we all know that doing so probably does not come without some consequences.
However on a Nat 20, our friend Thimble was able to discover a nyxie hidden in a spring named Brookmeadow (who asked if you were in grave danger, and then said "Hey are you headed for Hawthorn's Glade?").

Brookmeadow being very cautious about your friends, but maybe not so cautious about doing her job of protecting, it's a hard gig; you're protecting Hawthorn's Glade but you're also trying to find faeries that need Hawthorn's Glade, that's a hard call to make, you're not going to get that right 100% of the time.

So you guys headed deeper into Dahapshanee and made the call to not risk being caught flatfooted in the forest at night. As Kattigan heard in his watch the strange moans of the creatures off in the forest, you probably made the right call.
You also met Ulbid Morn (a gnomish astronomer who was happy to open his gates to you) who was a friend of Abalang Howl's (who had directed you off in that way) who not only kept his telescope pointed skyward (working on behalf of the Old Path, the Druids of the Old Path) to keep tabs on the Stormwrack, that eternal storm. We say eternal. It's been 70 years, maybe after 100 it'll go away? Does that feel like it'll happen? Ulbid Morn doesn't think so. Ulbid Morn thinks it's getting worse, but he also is happy to make life a little easier for himself by swinging that telescope around to keep an eye on who's making their way up and down the King's Way from Timmony (where he acknowledged that he had seen some Crow Keeper wagons moving under the banner of House Tachonis up north) and also happened to spy a royal caravan of the King of Timmony with three red hounds on a white field headed south along the road towards either the Dvalmar Pass or Dol-Makjar.
After that little bit of information gathering:

  • he was happy to treat you to some porridge
  • keep you safe for the night with his spider climbing goat ready to sound the alarm at any moment
  • He was happy to work that evening collecting some of his daughters' toys and was busy working on a sword for Thimble
  • and connected with Teor during his watch about the fact that the banner outside his home (much threadworn over 12 years of standing watch over the forest) says in Gnomish, "Welcome Home"

He's tended to it for a long, long time.
Morning has arrived and you guys have a little bit more hope than you had heading out from Dol-Makjar that at least you're on the right trail. You know that Cyd at least made it part of the way through the forest headed north (and you know that it's also good that he's not going to get caught in the immediate future by Casimir, but you also know that they're headed to the same location and that Casimir's got the road at his advantage getting through there). You don't know how fast Cyd can move on his own through the forest. Perhaps he's taking it thoughtfully and carefully. But he certainly didn't find Ulbid, and you don't know what you would've done if you hadn't; danger still looms over this forest.
But it's morning and some bowls of the (still from the night before) little cauldron of porridge has heated up. This time, you see the same porridge is reheated but with some different dried fruits and nuts added into it to freshen the taste profile from what you had the night before.

Episode 5: Branching Paths

Riding out from the gates of Dol-Makjar, into the darkness (Teor Pridesire, Thimble, Kattigan Vale, Tyranny, and Wicander Halovar) begin a journey whose end (at this point in time) we cannot see. Fittingly, it is difficult for any of you to see past even the snouts of your horses or (in Thimble's case) the dim light cast by the fluttering of your pixie wings; for rain falls from the sky overhead, close as you are to the Stormwrack here.
Heading out into the darkness, the gates behind you, time is of the essence.
Somewhere out there, a man who put a knife in the back of your beloved friend is walking free, chasing down the deed to a stronghouse (a fort at some far edge of civilization) a treasure that he was willing to sell your friend's life for. And just ahead of him (you hope) is Teor's brother, if they haven't gotten to him already.
Flying through the night, Thimble, what does it feel like to hold onto this purpose that you have set for yourself?
Already something deadly and burning within your heart is keeping you safe from something that (in its own right) might be even more terrifying.
Teor, it's been a long time since you've seen your brother. As you ride out, does your mind drift to Casimir (the person you're pursuing) or to your brother, whom your prey, now themselves pursue? Rain mats the fur on either side of the bridge of your snout as you lean into the darkness, you've lost so much since the end of the war (and know so many people who seem to have faltered and fallen into losing even themselves).
Wicander, at the last possible moment, riding up the ridge--

At this late hour, there's very few people on the road, but Dol-Makjar is large enough that there's still a handful of stragglers even in the week hours of the morning. Some trundling a cart to get to some early farmers' market by dawn's first light and others that have been trudging weary miles.

--the last moment you look (with the mountain peaks on either side, this is the last place in the road that you will be able to see the lights of the Villa Aurora in the city behind you; one more step of your horse and that home will disappear), do you gaze behind you at this place or not?
Regardless of what you've learned about the nature of your family's creed, there is always some comfort in ritual.
Tyranny, the same is posed to you. You venture forth now having advised boldness and decisive action, and now the rain of this world (a world in which you were not born) falls upon your brow. Do you look back at the city you now leave? Or do your eyes stay fixed in the same direction as Wick's?

"Doing the right thing... that's supposed to come with immediate rewards, right? Otherwise, what makes it the right thing? Certainly your material conditions having immediately deteriorated past the point of familiarity, that can't be what good deeds are rewarded with. If that were the case, then people would be behaving selfishly all the time. Your ears slick to the sides of your head (so soaked with rain, drooping down, matching the verticality of your horns like a giant middle finger pointing into the sky over your head).
Kattigan, you're returning to Timmony. What's on your mind as you make your way back to where you have so long dwelled? This is the very beginning of our Soldiers' table, and this is where big decisions and big rolls happen. I'm going to need a
Survival Check.

Episode 4: Stone Faced

Evening in Dol-Makjar. A crisp, cool night.
Footsteps approach. A seedy tavern in The Fray (the lowermost neighborhood of the city).
Noise of shattering glass bottles in nearby alleyways. Raucous shouts, fights breaking out, loud music. The braying of a nearby horse as a carriage trundles down the street.
Sputtering torchlight casting shadows long and widce through the city streets.
A humble sign of a tavern. Potter's Field (the symbol of a nameless gravestone on it's side). A few drunken reprobates outside.
Bolaire walks through a neighborhood so far removed from the Arcanade that the odds of being recognized in this place are next to none.
Door swings open. Smugglers, criminals, few people under sputtering candlelight speaking in hushed tones. Bartender looks up to perceive Bolaire, and with that eye contact, nods, communicating that no, he does not perceive you, not tonight, in any case.
At the back of this humble, liquor-drenched hovel is a thick red door. Brass studs throughout it. It's hidden behind a curtain, but it's sturdier than just about anything else in here. Seated behind the curtain is a thin, reedy figure who looks up at your approach.

Bolaire:"No evil."
He pushes his hand into the leather covering the door. Something heavy like stone grates in a hidden hinge. The wall swings open, and for a minute, overpowering the stench of rot and ale on the floor, powerful incense. Something heady, otherworldly, as you step into the shadows.
You enter a hidden place of leisure behind Potter's Field. You look in and see the proprietor, Devlin, look up to you. Rows and rows of bottles and crystal glassware overhead. The fixtures here: brass, velvet; of a higher caliber than that which resides in the exterior. Devlin, a brimmed hat pitched forward to cover the very top of his forehead, looks up at you. His eyes always reflect a few more candles, a few more lanterns, than are ever present in this actual physical space.
He looks up and goes,
"Master, pleasure to see you. Can I pour you a drink, or are you only here for a spell?"

Episode 3: The Snipping of Shears

At a broad table, here in the banquet hall of the Villa Aurora (the Halovar estate), Teor, you are seated on a exquisite, velvet-lined and cushioned seat as a small, white velvet sack of coins lands with a thunk in front of you. The woman speaking to you says,
"And, of course, for any accoutrement needed for your service as a guardian errant of the Lord Wicander Halovar. The Mercanaud Couturier will be happy to fit you and your gear to our station. We attempt to make clear that violence is always a regrettable, tragic, and final resort; that the weaponry, armor, and tabardry of our various vassals and men-at-arms bear the symbol of the Candescent Creed, but we would shudder to think of you going out of your own pocket for that."
Teor:"Oh, that is most understood. I think, if I might suggest an alternative, perhaps for an extra level of security, perhaps I could stay as I am, plainclothes, to not draw attention to anything that needs to be done on behalf of the Candescent Creed. A more covert security force."
"A splendid suggestion. It is such an exciting proposition to imagine, that by wearing the symbol of the Candescent Creed, you may attempt to be covert in proudly wearing the symbol of the order."
Close behind you, you hear dogs barking as the door flies open and on these sets of silvery-white chains, this massive knight walks in, heavily-armored, gray-bearded, human knight. He's got gleaming, luminous tattoos all around his neck that curl up around over his eyes. He walks in and goes,
"Ah, you're the former Bannersman, yes?"
Teor:"That would be me, Teor."
"Well, Teor, it's a pleasure to meet you. I am Sir Filoneus Halovar. These are my dogs Wrath and Judgement. I can't tell which one is which, but then again when it comes to wrath and judgment, who can?!"
Teor:"Indeed. Both beautiful companions."
You see one dog snarls and it has a dull glow from the back of its throat. You hear a sort of faint humming from its vocal chords, almost like it can't stop whining. This whining is sort of beautiful, ethereal, almost angelic.
Teor:"Such a beautiful noise they make. I have never heard the like."
Fil:"Oh, yes. They can't stop singing, these dogs. The song confuses spellcasters. They're good dogs. Glad to have you aboard! Well you're best on your way to the couturier. We expect you back first thing tomorrow."

I need all of you to roll a d4.

I'm going to need Azune and Kattigan to each give me a Death Saving Throw.

Overhead, arrows fly through the sky. Nearby, Loza Blade, about twelve or thirteen years younger than the last time we saw her, cries out as, thump thump, two arrows go into her shoulder. You see that she takes a small axe off a holster under an arm and hucks it across a battlefield as an archer commander says, "Another vol--" [axe in the head, falls to the ground].
She says, "Get back under the hill!" and shoves a young Tunks, the boarman (who at this point is only about 16) is a kid. As he grunts and snorts back into the waiting darkness.
You see overhead a rippling spiral of green necromantic energy shoot overhead. Far away from you, you see your friend Milo looking up and saying, "Everyone keep moving for-"
[skull gone, dead, to the ground].
Kattigan, on the ground, describe your character for us in this moment and describe the injury that is starting to bleed out past the point of repair.
You see overhead the sky darkens as two sorcerors of the Sundered Houses fly under their own power. One of them drops from the sky, looks across the battlefield.
A tiny mote of light, as time almost slows.

Teor: "Down!"
I'm going to need everyone here to roll initiative.

Episode 1: The Fall of Thjazi Fang

Liam, someone you love very much is about to die. Could you please introduce us to your character?
This moment you stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of the city of Dol-Makjar, its grey stone standing proud here at the eastern edge of the land known as Kahad. You stand under the Guardian Wall, heroes of the Shapers' War carved in statue some 80 feet tall, their torsos emergin from masonry, from the rock and stone of the mountainside, lean and hold the mountains of Kavros at bay. These statues, arrayed side by side, orcs and dwarves, elves and humans, halflings, gnomes, beastfolk rendered here as heroes of a revolution now fading from memory. Their looks of determination, heroism, and strength carved forevermore into their faces. What hope they bear in their noble visages. Under their arms stands the base of this massive wall at the eastern edge of the city Dol-Makjar, towering spires that follow the River Vrosh step-by-step down from the mountains. As the city comes to life over your own neighborhood, you see a flight of magpies, black wings, white breasts, take to the sky, flying over the stream as the mist rises on this gray day. The days have been mostly gray recently.
The Guardian Wall (like much of Dol-Makjar) is a place dedicates to heroism, camaraderie, the struggle of the mortal world to make a brighter day. It is here, under the Guardian Wall, that they have strung up the hangman's noose to kill your brother, Thjazi Fang.
Behind the wall, a wagon approaches. Soldiers, their heraldry and tabards alive with the crests of the Sundered Houses (Taconis, Halovar, Royce, Einfasen, Cormoray) march. You would think some beast of legend was left within this wagon, barred with iron as it is, for the amount of soldiers marching this man to the gallows. But it is just one man. The wagon pulls up to a small dais, wooden staircase, and a door leading through the wall out to the awaiting crowd and the hangman's noose. Waiting at the steps, his eyes on the approaching wagon, Luis, is your character.
