I'm old enough to remember when the US was a country that led the world in research, science, space exploration, health... and wasn't an arrested development fascist hellhole run by insane clowns.
Sadly, that should also tell you how old I am 🙁
For civil discussion of US politics. Be excellent to each other.
Rule 1-3, 6 & 7 No longer applicable
Rule 4: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a jerk. It’s not acceptable to say another user is a jerk. Cussing is fine.
Rule 5: Be excellent to each other. Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, ableist, will be removed.

As soon as the USSR collapsed, America went back to its 19th century roots.
I... I need to sit with this one for a bit. The idea that the Cold War might have been better for everyone is not a position I'm prepared to reckon with.
This is, sadly, a pretty reasoned position among some political analysts. Having the USSR as an easy counterpart to point to forced the US to actually bother with addressing social issues and not totally allowing employers and the rich to run roughshod on society.

Not just the US either. You could lump most of Europe in here too.
9/11 was the final nail in the coffin
You and me both. There were still plenty problems. But at least there were one or two things you could be proud of. As opposed to..... nothing.
The US was never a great country by any stretch of the imagination. But it was headed in the right direction - slowly. There was hope. Now hope is gone: the country is officially as dumb as a sack of bricks and getting dumber by the minute. And most people don't know that, but dumb ends with a B...
Yep. Being unable to treat people different from themselves as animals under the law, really broke a lot of people. So obsessed with continuing it through any loopholes or systems they could implement. It cost us the labor movement and Manufacturing. So much science and culture as well. Finally even our ability just to maintain the lives we've had. All so a few ignorant insecure people with no personal achievements of their own to be proud in. Can take pride simply in the conditions of their birth.
So normalized and accepted. That a lot of culture was Rewritten and woven into it. It's why despite living in the midwest I despise most modern country music. Suburbanite sock puppets pretending and singing about thank god they're a country boy, or how good the country is, or how great it is to be from the country. Unvarnished pure processed jingoism. And nobody bats an eye.
I refuse to let go of hope, if that makes me delusional, so be it.
26?
Because you think the first clown was Dubya? 🙂
He was the first properly, certifiably, proudly stupid president. He was also the first openly fascist president. But he was far from the first clown. That honor rests with Reagan.
If you really want to go back in time, let's not forget Andrew Jackson.
yeah back when it was just an efficient fascist hellhole run by cruel bureaucrats.
The US has been the evil empire for longer than any of us on this site have been alive. It was evil before my grandparents were born.
They used to make movies with scientists as the heroes. Of course, that was mostly because scientists created the atomic bomb that was seen as ending the WWII.
Hmm, interesting. Didn't Alex Jones basically have all of his everything ripped away from him for making similar claims about Sandy Hook? I say we give RFK the Jones treatment.
How hard I pronounce the F in “Fuck that guy”

Same as the covid deaths that "didn't count" because of comorbidities.
Everything this administration says is altogether fabricated.
This is our chief health dude. Yeah.
My favorite comment on this, "What in the never-nude is going on here?"
