Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Never upvoted an unpopular opinion so fast.

I've had that stuff once in my life, and that was enough. Unbelievable.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago

Same, immediate upvote along with a small gag

Well done! A proper UO! Now get out!

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 16 points 1 month ago

This isn't even an unpopular opinion. It is an objectively incorrect statement.

[–] ZERONOVABLOSSOM@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 month ago

Actually brave take here

[–] Big_Boss_77@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

Kewpie and nothing else!

[–] __Lost__@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Yes! I finally got some a few months ago and it is so so so much better than any other I've tried.

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 11 points 1 month ago

Miracle Whip is made from water, soybean oil, high-fructose corn syrup, vinegar, modified corn starch, eggs, salt, natural flavor, mustard flour, potassium sorbate, spice, and dried garlic.

So, a lot of shit that is unhealthy. It's not unpopular, you're just wrong.

[–] jaemo@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago

Definitely. As an industrial lubricant, you'll not find a superior product to stop that sliding door from squeaking.

I have heard that some fools consider it edible though. I cannot fathom why however. Molten glass dipped in sulphuric acid would be more palatable.

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 10 points 1 month ago

You are wrong, upvote.

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

high-fructose corn syrup

Can't tell if you're one of those insane people who like corn syrup sodas or one of those insane people who like diet sodas.

Either way, well done, you pissed off a lot of people lmao

Ah, yes, Satan's Cum.

If it wasn’t for the Wu Tang Clan / Bobby Digital lyrics I wouldn’t even know such a product existed.

[–] EntheoNaut@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago

Truly an unpopular opinion

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

What the fuck is a miracle whip?

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Mayonnaise + copious amounts of ~~sugar~~ high fructose corn syrup.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've argued the merits of miracle whip for over a decade at least. I despise the food snobbery underpinning its hate anyway, and the fact that it has its culinary place just adds spice to my disgust.

But better? Nah, just a different product with different use cases.

It's like saying oranges are better than apples. Yeah, someone may like one better than the other, but they're totally different experiences and are used differently as ingredients. MW may be closer to mayo than apples and oranges, but that's a matter of degree, not essense.

I tend to favor MW on most sandwiches personally, but some mix of mayo and MW in salads, deviled eggs and the like. Dips are almost always mayo.

But even that is preference, not an objective state of being. No food preferences are ever objective.

Oranges are better than apples ya fuckin nerd, ever have a tangerine?

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Godamn, he's... Untouchable

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Pfft, tangerines aren't oranges, they're tangerines.

And have your ever seen a tangerine pie? No, because it would be a pulpy mess. >!and if you bring up lemon meringue or key lime, I shall throw a granny smith at you!<

[–] Ironrod@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Lemon meringue though 😘

Read as cool whip, was confused.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

That's because it's still mined from the deep well deposits that exist underneath Indiana.

While "real" mayonnaise is that abomination the French came up with after they mined out all of their deposits.

[–] dnick@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

Both are gross

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 month ago

This was such a gender split in my family, through generations. The men like Miracle Whip, the women liked mayo.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

As a general rule, anything you're whipping up fresh is going to be better than what comes out of a can.

But I'll spot you that the generic brand store bought mayo jar is marginally less appealing that the name brand improved variety.

[–] A_Very_Big_Fan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

False. Next question.

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I get so much hate for even keeping a jar of it in the house. While duke’s mayo is great, I still just prefer miracle whip.

If it wasn't selling sufficient to encourage repurchasing, it wouldn't still be on the shelves. Just like Coke and Pepsi and the "generic" store brands.

I wouldn't argue that any choice is better than another, unless you're talking cheaper or lower calorie or something, but you are definitely allowed to like one more than another.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

there's a few things where mayo is used, where the sweetness of salad dressing like miracle whip just won't do.

but for the most part, yea. salad dressing is better. i keep a jar of it in the fridge and use some at least 1-2 times a week. i only get mayo when i need it.. and then i often just keep packets from takeaway or 'event' meals to use later. i'd never use a whole jar of mayo before it turned to yuck.

[–] Th3D3k0y@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

The last time I used miracle whip was when I made what I dubbed "the whitest sandwich":

2 slices of Kahn's bologna

2 slices Kraft American cheese

2 slices of Wonderbread

Miracle Whip

Side of Lays plain potato chips

It wasn't bad, but I never used that jar again, and it was the only time in the last 25 years I had miracle whip on purpose.

[–] EntheoNaut@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Add some pickle relish to that abomination

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Hellmans/Best changed their recipe a few years ago and tasted like trash. Switched between a few “fancier” expensive brands and couldn’t find the right flavor, then tried the store brand and it was exactly right and cheaper.

I think Best switched back, but it’s too late , I’m not paying the higher price any longer.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Make your own.

Takes me less than 5 minutes with a stick blender, and I control everything that goes in it.

This is a decent recipe, except I'd sub a light olive oil and add an egg yolk (so one egg, one yolk).

I make it about once a month.

We started boycotting Hellmans/Best with the change as well. We go with Duke's now.

[–] robolemmy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Miracle whip is better with bologna. In all other cases mayonnaise is better.

Upvoted for being genuinely unpopular and only mostly incorrect.
