Wait, someone can actually afford the stuff in the gift shop? I thought it was just another exhibit

the gift shop is where i pick up my 4 year old son, cover his eyes with my hand, and walk fast towards the exit

Is there a version of me that can afford the gift shop in there somewhere as well?

They are so expensive. There should be some kind of program to help lower income people afford gifts. Or at least kids.

Reminds me of a childhood friend. When I was young whenver I went to a museum with my family we looked at the exhibits and never went to the gift shop. Whenever I went to a museum with my friend and his family, his family's first thing to do was to go to the gift shop, I'm not even sure they cared about the museums. They were also much richer.

I go to big museums a lot when I'm on vacation. Watched the 2024 eclipse from Perot Museum of Science in Dallas.

We flew in and out of Houston, though, and planned a couple days on either side of the trip there.

Cool things about Houston:

  • Museum of Natural Science, and its gift shop. I never saw so many things I'd want to buy in zoo/museum gift shop.
  • The tunnel through the seal tank at the zoo. Actually the zoo as a whole was pretty damn sweet.
  • Johnson Space Center.
  • The mall is actually bumping, and it has an ice rink inside.
  • The highways are actually fascinating, from a purely architectural point of view.

Shitty things about Houston:

  • Literally everything else.

Seriously of all the stops on that trip (we did Houston-->Austin-->Dallas-->Houston...best flights were in/out of Houston and I really wanted to spend a couple nights in Austin), Houston is definitely #5. I only visited 3 cities. That's how shit it is.

But the museum was one of the most amazing I have ever been in. I bought a membership to it even though I was flying home two days later with no intention of ever returning to Texas, let alone Houston. (It's cheaper for a family of four who parked and want a planetarium show to become members, even if for just one visit)

The one time I visited Houston I hated everything about it, and the only thing about the highways that stood out to me was the horrifying amount of roadkill all over them. It’s good to hear the museum at least is cool, in case I’m ever unfortunate enough to end up there again
