Like the other person said, they're likely taking it to a metal scrapyard for easy cash. You get 10¢/lb for steel, $1.50/lb for aluminum, and $5/lb for copper. If you own a pickup truck, you can make a decent chunk of change in a day of simply driving through alleyways and backroads and picking up whatever bits of metal you find along the way.

I know it was a joke but it had a question in it that I knew the answer to, so I was compelled to reply.
