Panspermia, because pee is stored in the balls.

But I like Stanislaw Lem's version. Some aliens used Earth as an illegal garbage dump. That's why humans are so prone to pollution.

"Pollution" is just a natural process of excretion. One could say that the oxidation of earth is cyanobacteria "polluting" their oxygen waste. But I guess how humans pollute the earth is far weirder than anything and quicker than ever experienced.
