Turned this shit off as soon as I saw it. What a bunch of bullshit. So IDEs have had quote completion features for years and now you want to claim that you "co-authored" my work because you suggested an end-quote and I hit tab? Fuck off, tempted to just disable this shit for my whole org when they change the billing model anyways.

Seriously my house has 60 outlets and switches like that and they are all being replaced.

My wife leaves lights on all the time. I gave up and just put in smart plugs and lights so I don't have to get up and turn them off.

Typically I prefer plugs, but with things like a nightstand lamp that has USB charging ports on it, I don't want to turn off the whole device, so I use smart light bulbs.

The only smart appliance that I've found useful is the oven. If my wife leaves it on I can turn it off from my phone.

The "palantiri" reference is even worse than the simplified explanation in the article. They are crystal balls that were intended to be used for good and have been corrupted by an evil tyrant. When initially well-intentioned characters like Saruman and Denethor try to use them to monitor their enemies, what they see is warped by Sauron to be what Sauron wants them to see and the user is corrupted. It results in Denethor and Saruman doing some fucked up shit that they are convinced is for the better good.

So yeah, seems a little too much "on the nose". Might as well just name your company TyrantCorp.

Just did the same thing with a 2015 Intel MacBook Pro. It runs great, had some issues with screen flickering but I think it was only happening while using Remmina for RDP and it seems to have gone away by excluding Remmina from display scaling (retina display). So far pretty good battery life too...

Is it because Netgear is a "US" company? Meaning they are on the US stock exchange, have corporate offices in the US, and manufacture everything in Asia?

Maybe not, I don't know how much he makes, there's a lot I'd put up with if it could mean early retirement. If he's really making 2.8m in two years then that's a mil after taxes and there's no reason he couldn't retire at 40 and live a more modest lifestyle. Could be worth it.

Yeah seems kind of whiny since he's super successful and was probably already well-off, but on the other hand...

I'm kind of tired of hearing that my nieces and nephews have no career goals other than to be a "content creator".

Maybe if more people were honest about what it takes and how the social media companies have started to squeeze creators then kids would aspire to get real jobs.

Yeah, it's not a trivial problem to solve either, especially if platforms censor mentions of decentralized alternatives.

However, it's hard for the oligarchs to censor the fact that an organization like EFF exists, and hopefully someone clicks on one of their posts and reads something on their blog about decentralized alternatives.

I just moved to a small town. A regional city has rolled out municipal fiber and the towns around it have the opportunity to hook into that city's municipal fiber network if we rollout the infrastructure.

Comcast is spending money through fake grassroots groups to try to get people to vote NO.

I'm trying to convince my fellow citizens to vote YES. The town would take out a loan to rollout the infrastructure, monthly fees would go to pay off that loan and presumably pay the city for the fiber connection as well.

Honestly, the details don't interest me as much as just having a better service and having an option other than Comcast. I figured that "locally owned and operated" would be a slam dunk with xenophobic Republicans, but they seem to be convinced by Comcast's lobbying on the issue and are going to vote NO because taxes might go up (if people don't switch to the service). Has anyone had success with convincing people of the value of municipal fiber?

A Norwegian man said he was horrified to discover that ChatGPT outputs had falsely accused him of murdering his own children.

According to a complaint filed Thursday by European Union digital rights advocates Noyb, Arve Hjalmar Holmen decided to see what information ChatGPT might provide if a user searched his name. He was shocked when ChatGPT responded with outputs falsely claiming that he was sentenced to 21 years in prison as "a convicted criminal who murdered two of his children and attempted to murder his third son," a Noyb press release said.
