I don't get how this kind of law goes all the way into law. Yes, there are many tech illiterate old people making laws, and yes there are a lot of powerful tech billionaires lobbying, but still, are there really no roadblocks for them?

This law is unenforceable, and it's going to be abused by authorities.

I've been using bangs for a while, and I never thought of this myself! I'll definitely start doing this.

Do you know of a good way to sync/export&import these keywords that does not involve the Firefox account thing?

Great list! And just to add a bit:

yt-dlp is indeed insanely powerful, and works for way more than just YouTube, for both audio(music) and video. Supported sites

LocalSend is supported on all platforms, and is perfect for situations where you traditionally use a USB to move files.

I find this question quite fascinating: Culturally, there are countries where this gets asked indeed as a form of greeting, not a genuine question.

In Slavic countries, I feel like if you get asked this question, it's generally considered to be of genuine interest, and you'll get a genuine reply. Nothing offensive or informal about saying "Things are bad." or "I feel bad.", or any variant of such.

This might be my perception however, and feel free to correct me. I myself think that if someone asks how I'm doing, I have no need or responsibility to "remain positive/pleasant".

This is such a unique gaming experience given by Hideo Kojima, and this clearly shows how much people enjoy it. I'm here considering buying it for my PC too, as it's just THAT good!

As I commented in a different thread: Despite the origin being in memes and generally unserious content, and this being a fringe group which few have heard of, the sentiment of potentially creating a place for those who are considered Russian enough to be excluded/segregated from Estonian society, but also do not want to be part of Russia, is understandable.

Nevertheless, a new state is probably never going to be a serious possibility, nor should it be. Estonians still have a way to go in regards to segregation of Russian-Estonians however... I know someone who is Estonian, but had to change their name to mitigate the amount of prejudice they were exposed to, as the name was Russian in origin.

What post are you referring to? And could you link us to the relevant discussion(s) that sparked this post in the first place?

A little bit meta, but I'm fascinated by the vote ratio of your post and comments. Makes me wonder if there's anything personal going on here... And from what I can tell here on Lemmy, I perceive you as a level-headed person.

Right, honestly forgot about that. Not something I use personally, but hear a lot of buzz about. Anyhow, could a good thing be then to support companies like Fairphone, who sells their phones with e/OS/ already installed? I'll try and recommend it to my friends, if that is the case.

Will other custom ROMs still allow for sideloading? Like PostmarketOS, e/OS/, LineageOS etc.?

I've been looking for good power optimization software so I don't drain my battery while playing lightweight games. So one of the most interesting options I found was power-options , but it doesn't seem to be very updated and apparently there aren't other contributors other than two people.

Has anyone tried it? is it safe and works as intended?

I am also worried about uninstalling it. does it revert all the policies it imposes or I will need to reinstall my system to go back to normal?

I am on Fedora 43 if that matters

His Japan & family vlogs are also really chill - he has become much more chill and proper. If you remember him from when he got big on YouTube 10 - 15 years ago, he was a completely different person!

I'm sorry that you had to go through that, and I must emphasize that I do not wish to "let" anyone be exposed to this. However, I remain unconvinced that it's "more common than I think". The amount of sexual assault that women are exposed to is unfortunately far, far more common, and a bigger problem that should take precedence in being dealt with.

TL;DW:
A video by Veritasium about how a single dependency (.xz) was momentarily compromised leading to the compromise of OpenSSH (which uses .xz as a dependency), which ultimately would have spelled out a master key access to Linux systems across the world.

Really cool how they explain and visualize LZ, Deflate, LZMA and RSA.

Shout-out to all the Open Source contributors out there! And a reminder to others to show your appreciation to those who dedicate time and resources to projects that often go unappreciated or for granted.

Depending on your perspective and your environment, there might be a hopeless amount of bad things going on. Things like war, potential war, increasing income disparity, fascism, capitalism, big tech taking over, AI bubble, etc. etc.. So how does one pull out someone who is exposed to an unhealthy amount of negativity like this, and motivate them to work towards something positive that is within their sphere of influence?

Myself, I think I'm gifted/cursed with stubbornness: I refuse to back down just because there is a huge statistic showing we're f#@ked, when I know there are things I can do to counteract the negative situations. Every little bit helps, everything from providing free educational support for individuals (counteracts ignorance), to tending to my garden (counteracts climate change), and buying the slightly more expensive local products in the store as long as I can afford it (counteracts monopolies).

There are plenty more small things, but the ultimate question I've had on my mind for a long time, is simply how to make others think like me? I am a happy individual despite my small sphere of influence in this world, and I wish for others to have that same happiness.

P.S.
If you, or someone you know, would like to discuss mindsets and how to approach the world with determination, my DMs are open.

Be it books, movies, documentaries, or even music. I feel like I have people around me whom wish to fight violence with violence, with mentalities like "we should just counter-invade and show them who's boss" or "I'm not afraid to fight for what I believe in", showing a clear intent against an "enemy".

"The enemy" is such a dehumanizing perspective, and only breeds further animosity. I wish for them to see that we all manage to find justifications for our actions, but that doesn't make it worthy of just any sacrifice.

I recently saw the Norwegian movie Max Manus, which is about real events during WW2.

Tap for spoilerHe survives, but with almost none of his friends, and after the war he struggles with alcoholism and nightmares for the rest of his life.

It left me with a feeling of despite "victory", many people paid with more than just their life. And this is the feeling I wish others to feel, just for a bit, and ponder if "doing the right thing" really is the best thing.

No one should want conflict, and I wish to emphasize just how much we really should try and avoid warmongering. I've seen uncensored videos from modern wars, been in the military, had a great grandfather who fought in WW2 (who also struggled with nightmares and PTSD until his natural death), and all of it makes me dread the potential of the horrors that happen to everyone involved in an armed conflict, especially the innocents and the kids...

So, any suggestions for media that conveys this in a way that makes one really reflect?

It has been a while since they started the fundraising, but it's heartwarming to see it reaching such a level by the end of the year!

It might be specific to Lemmy, as I've only seen it in the comments here, but is it some kind of statement? It can't possibly be easier than just writing "th"? And in many comments I see "th" and "þ" being used interchangeably.

Some readers may recall the Lynx-R1 headset — it was conceived as an Android virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) headset with built-in hand tracking, designed to be open where others were closed, allowing developers and users access to inner workings in defiance of walled gardens. It looked very promising, with features rivaling (or surpassing) those of its contemporaries.

Founder [Stan Larroque] recently announced that Lynx’s 6DoF SLAM (simultaneous location and mapping) solution has been released as open source. ORB-SLAM3 (GitHub repository) takes in camera images and outputs a 6DoF pose, and does so effectively in real-time. The repository contains some added details as well as a demo application that can run on the Lynx-R1 headset.

The unusual optics are memorable. (Hands-on Lynx-R1 by Antony Vitillo)

As a headset the Lynx-R1 had a number of intriguing elements. The unusual optics, the flip-up design, and built-in hand tracking were impressive for its time, as was the high-quality mixed reality pass-through. That last feature refers to the headset using its external cameras as inputs to let the user see the real world, but with the ability to have virtual elements displayed and apparently anchored to real-world locations. Doing this depends heavily on the headset being able to track its position in the real world with both high accuracy and low latency, and this is what ORB-SLAM3 provides.

A successful crowdfunding campaign for the Lynx-R1 in 2021 showed that a significant number of people were on board with what Lynx was offering, but developing brand new consumer hardware is a challenging road for many reasons unrelated to developing the actual thing. There was a hands-on at a trade show in 2021 and units were originally intended to ship out in 2022, but sadly that didn’t happen. Units still occasionally trickle out to backers and pre-orders according to the unofficial Discord, but it’s safe to say things didn’t really go as planned for the R1.

It remains a genuinely noteworthy piece of hardware, especially considering it was not a product of one of the tech giants. If we manage to get our hands on one of them, we’ll certainly give you a good look at it.
