Daniel Deluxe is a big name in the DarkSynth genre and this is his first full album since the soundtrack to Ghostrunner.

Also, here's a Spotify link if you don't do bandcamp.

This artwork has a backstory!

"After the great fracture, people were stuck in their flying fancy houses, so people had to get creative with how they got their packages delivered. The Pufferfish Airship Company is one such innovation."

This was a pretty quick project where I was doing some warmup sketches and started sketching blimps and hot air balloons and started experimenting with putting the balloon below the ship. I ended up with Pufferfish looking designs and wanted to put it in a context

I always appreciate the art that leans more into the punk side of cyberpunk rather than just the high-tech side. Also, this guy seems to have a lot of art with that aesthetic.

I dunno, at the end of GitS Motoko spent some time staring blankly from a child's body. I think they'd have a lot in common. 🤪

Ghost in the Shell x Serial Experiments Lain mash-up

According to the reddit post where I saw this image, it was originally posted to a tumblr account which has since been deleted. So now this image just floats through the internet, untethered (much like Lain).

Ahhh, that would make more sense. Thanks!

I wouldn't have called Contra or Bionic Commando cyberpunk (although they are kinda sci-fi) but I've never heard of those other games so I'll definitely check them out, thanks!

And yeah, I'm setting a pretty low bar here. "Futuristic urban decay" is close enough to cyberpunk that I'd be at least interested in playing those games.

That's right, Smash TV! Good call, I always think of it as a SNES game but it did start out in arcades first.

This looks more and more like the original manga's artstyle. I'm curious if the story will follow the manga too or if it'll be an original story, I don't think I've heard any rumors about the plot.

Sorry, I was referring more to coin-op stand-up arcade games, not arcade-inspired indie games. But yes, Huntdown is a fantastic game and I'm looking forward to the roguelike sequel Huntdown: Overtime!

I was watching some random YouTube video that was listing arcade games for some reason (I honestly don't even remember what the video was) and they mentioned a game called Cyber-Lip. I'd never heard of it before but it looked cyberpunk to me so I had to dig deeper. Apparently it's a Neo-Geo arcade game made by SNK in 1990. It's basically a mix between Contra and Metal Slug, except Metal Slug came out in 1996 (also made by SNK). So I guess this game must've been SNK trying out the Metal Slug formula.

Anyway, I have no idea what "Cyber-Lip" means, and I'm not entirely sure this game is cyberpunk beyond the first level. Except the main character is definitely a 90's cyberpunk:

But this game got me thinking... what other cyberpunk arcade games are there? As obsessed as I am with cyberpunk, I can only think of a couple titles that are close. There's the Tron and Discs of Tron games, although those are mostly cyberpunk-by-proxy due to their relation to the movie. But what else is there? The Aerosmith rail-shooter Revolution X?? There's a shoot-em-up called Last Resort whose first level looks cyberpunk to me but I don't think the rest of the game is. And that's all I can come up with! That's crazy to me.

Cyberpunk was in its peak of popularity while arcade games were still popular and yet I'm not aware of any other cyberpunk arcade games. I'm obviously thinking more of the "retro" arcade games here but even if I include modern arcade games, nothing comes to mind.

So help me out, what arcade games can you remember that even might be cyberpunk?

We all knew I was going to post this here eventually...

Abigail is a Russian steampunk/aetherpunk movie from 2019. As far as steampunk movies go, it got a relatively big budget. That is, the movie doesn't look amateurish or indie. Although as a story, it's just ok. Or maybe I'm just not used to Russian movies, I don't know.

Here's a trailer to give you an idea what it looks like. Plus, this movie is easy to watch on streaming. It's on Prime Video, Roku, Tubi, Plex, and even YouTube (with ads). You might as well give it a try and see what you think.

There's a common trope in fantasy (and fairy tales) that knowing the "True Name" of something gives you complete control over it. In the early days of cyberpunk (1981), Vernor Vinge wrote a short story that tweaked this fantasy trope for the cyberpunk genre. A hacker is only known by their handle; so to know a hacker's True Name is to be able to call the cops on them.

This is just a short story (about 60 pages) and I recommend reading it. It's an interesting glimpse into the early days of cyberpunk. Also, being a short story, it should be pretty easy to find online if you know where to look.

With the Age Verification laws starting to spring up all over the world, and politicians desperately wanting to remove anonymity from the internet, I've been thinking about this short story lately.

At first glance, this trailer looks extremely cyberpunk. And then some text appears saying "Kowloon, 1986"... and now I'm conflicted. Kowloon Walled City was probably the most cyberpunk (and also one of the most awful) actual places in history. It embodies the filth and low-life of cyberpunk... but it actually happened. So I'm not sure if this game is sci-fi at all; it might just take place in the 1980s. Not an alternate-history sci-fi vision of the 1980s, just the regular 1980s. Which would mean it isn't cyberpunk, just historical. But I figured I'd post it here and let you decide.

I should've read the youtube description before posting...

Here's what it says regarding the co-op:

Master the new Shell System: switch characters mid-combat to exploit lethal synergies and tear through enemies. Play solo or coordinate the carnage in online co-op with up to three players.

So it sounds like the single-player mode will have you controlling all three characters simultaneously but you can go co-op to have friends manage the other characters. Interesting.

Good idea, I'll do that!

It's too bad the last post on there was 8 months ago. There's no way I can prop-up another community in an attempt to keep it active. I should probably sub to that community just in case though...

EDIT: Oh, you're the one already attempting to prop-up that community! Nice work, I'll sub for sure!

When did they move away from the skull logo? I expected the new logo on the SR4A version but I didn't realize they'd already moved away from the skull logo in the original SR4.

Did you ever play the SNES version? How would you describe the differences between the SNES and Gensis games? I know they're totally different but I never played either.

[–] Hammerjack@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 month ago

Ah, ok. So it was intentionally trying to evoke the older artwork style. That makes a lot of sense, thanks for the clarification!

I'm doing everything I can to keep !cyberpunk@lemmy.zip active. But I focus on cyberpunk as a genre of fiction and avoid news about our actual everyday dystopia, so that makes it hard to consistently post something.

Also, !steampunk@lemmy.zip and !vampires@lemmy.zip . Doing my part to fight against the flood of news posts on Lemmy with wacky genre stuff.
