cross-posted from: https://piefed.zip/c/technology/p/1543444/waymo-pulled-its-cars-from-the-freeway-after-one-fled-police-with-horrified-couple-on-boar

"This is it. We're dead. We're going to die right here in the Waymo."

This combined with another recent article from some insiders at Tesla saying, along the lines, "You couldn't pay me to let one of these things drive me somewhere."

And yet I still know people who are just so chuffed about "never having to drive again."

EDIT: Comments have pointed out that this story is, at best, overblown and semi-fabricated otherwise. Take it with a massive grain of salt. But feel free to discuss self-driving, waymo, etc in the comments!

I visit Phoenix for work every 1-2 years. I'm there now this week. It's always interesting to see how the Waymos have evolved. Since the last time I was out here, they have added more sensors at each corner of the vehicle. They are obviously not part of the original design, sticking out like cancer lumps.

Maybe they just to retrofit their fleet with a few more sensors that detect cops chasing them down.

Sooooooo....when are Waymo execs going to prison for evading a police officer?

oh yeah sorry, forgot for a second there that laws only apply to the poors

What seems honestly more probable:

US government: “Here’s a massive subsidy for Waymo to improve their technology.”

Waymo: “For sure. Also, we’re laying off our entire engineering team.”

That's a great point – this isn't just about being greedy, it's about being proactive about maximizing company growth. Let me know if you'd like to hear more ideas on how to scam the government and its people!

Aw shit, Waymo became sentient!!

Waymo is frequently being driven by people… not joking.

[–] stephen01king@piefed.zip 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How frequently are we talking about here?

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I’m sure they aren’t willing to disclose that. But I’d imagine that there is always someone monitoring all cameras and can take over at a moments notice. To kill you or to watch that shit you do in the car when you think no one is watching or listening (btw, all video feeds are stored and visible to admins and devs)

So claims come from your imagination?

Waymo has said they can't control them remotely like an RC car, or even like a Tesla, which can at least be "summoned" straight forward and back out of a parking spot or garage from your phone. They can indirectly influence what the onboard computer decides, but not directly control it, apparently.

Back in December there were a bunch that got stuck around San Francisco for hours during the power outage because of the traffic lights being out, and delays in human responses to how to handle the out lights.

“Has said”

Dude totally believes everything big tech says.

Not at all, they just have no reason to purposefully leave several dozen vehicles blocking roads for hours because they got stuck if they could fix it remotely that easily. There is no advantage to doing that, only negatives and possibly even fines from the state.
