But this latest Trump story is messy for two reasons. One, the press was completely unaware of Trump’s whereabouts. Second, and more importantly, you have to ask: If Trump was moved off a plane because of a credible assassination threat, were the journalists who remained on that plane potentially in danger?

A year and a half ago, an independent body was still in charge of the White House press pool. Public broadcasters received hundreds of millions of dollars in federal support. Government agencies subscribed to news outlets vital to their work. Defense reporters had broad access to the Pentagon and officials within it. Federally funded outlets, both at home and abroad, operated with editorial independence.

Virtually all of that is gone now.

Teachers in the second-largest school district in the nation have had to remove Black Lives Matter, Land Back, and Palestinian flags from their classrooms as part of so-called corrective actions taken following a complaint alleging discrimination. The changes occurred at Downtown Magnets High School in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The district has over half a million students and 1,500 schools and centers.

Over the past decade, the steady march of digital technology, dominated by a cartel of giant global firms who collude with the US government’s system of political repression in exchange for tax breaks, antitrust forbearance and fat federal contracts has yielded more mass surveillance productivity gains than the previous 25 years.

But since returning to office last year, the Trump administration has almost categorically terminated existing TPS designations for some of the most dangerous countries in the world – a policy change that eventually led the highest court to authorize ending the program for Haiti and Syria, despite both countries being on the state department’s “do not travel” advisory list.

“In a stunning contradiction, the administration advises Americans against all travel to Haiti – and instructs those who go anyway to draft a will and submit DNA samples so their remains can be identified,” said Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, president and CEO of the immigrant-serving non-profit Global Refuge.

He continued: “That is the government’s own assessment of the danger. To then compel hundreds of thousands of Haitians into such dire circumstances is an unconscionable abdication of our moral responsibility.”

More than 300,000 Haitians have lost TPS permission overnight and could endure deportation if they have not applied for another form of immigration relief, such as asylum in the US or a green card. For a wide swathe of people, no such pathway to citizenship exists, even if they have lived in the US for decades.

When an Army veteran named Derek Chauvin put George Floyd in a fatal choke hold six years ago in Minneapolis, he was prosecuted and sentenced to a long prison term. It was another military veteran, Jonathan Ross — a former machine gunner in Iraq deployed in the Twin Cities last winter as an ICE agent — who fired on and killed Renée Good. But he has not yet faced any criminal charges.

So don’t hold your breath waiting for justice for Johan Sebastián Duran Guerrero. For the last eighteen months, federal immigration agents have operated with far less public oversight and accountability than any local police department. In the process, they have shot at twenty-three people — killing six of them — under circumstances that homicide detectives and local prosecutors have been blocked from properly investigating. The Department of Homeland Security has just doubled down on its policy of not releasing the names of officers involved in these fatal encounters. Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have been directed to stop investigating claims by those, like David Brouillette, who say they used lethal force in response to being endangered.

Under current circumstances, no friends, family members, or employment counselors of young veterans should encourage them to answer the siren call of ICE — no matter how much they need a job. As one former ICE official told the Boston Globe, “We should all be concerned . . .  that they have lowered standards, that they have rushed hiring, and they have made offers to people before their vetting is complete.”

The implicit threat is hard to miss. “Leave on your OWN terms,” ICE warned migrants in a social media post last September. “AVOID THE JAIL CELL. AVOID THE HUMILIATION.” Former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem last year launched a $220 million ad campaign touting that message with images of cuffed detainees being forcibly placed on planes.

Salus’ self-deportation operations stretch far and wide. A review of job postings shows the company and its subcontractor, BDR Strategic Services, have been hiring “facility enrollment managers” and “detainee support officers” near detention centers across the country. In a December court filing, Salus said it had dispatched two-person “enrollment management teams” to facilities to recruit migrants for the program. As of early July, its employees have entered at least 50 facilities across the country, according to a document that Walters shared. The company claims it has facilitated nearly 80,000 self-deportations.
